Companies exploring extended reality (XR) for productivity, creativity, and collaboration, are expanding its use cases. Many firm navigating the subtleties of mixed reality vs augmented reality may wonder how each are different.

Learning the difference between mixed reality vs augmented reality (MR/AR) is crucial. This will allow companies to invest in the right digital medium to benefit targeted objectives.

While many people have a general understanding of AR and MR, they struggle to tell the difference. For instance, both AR and VR experiences involve blending the virtual and real worlds. Many people also think that MR is just another term for AR.

XR Today reports on the latest extended reality news from around the globe, including virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality.

NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Ohio is exploring adding augmented reality to spacesuits in an effort to increase astronaut autonomy in instances of real-time communication challenges between space and Earth.

According to last week’s request for information, NASA is looking for potential sources or providers for a spacesuit augmented reality display system for its Joint Augmented Reality Visual Informatics System, or Joint AR, project. As noted in the request, NASA “aims to realize a spacesuit compatible AR system that is comprised of a display, control and compute subsystems.”

NASA is eyeing the technology to address communication delays with Earth and help astronauts with decision making.

Healthcare professionals are finding new ways to educate and train students and learners without a cadaver or live patient. The use of Augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and even extended reality (XR) in medicine prepares nurses as well as physicians and surgeons for real-life practice and procedures.

Research firm Research and Markets projects that the AR and VR market in healthcare could see a 22.5 percent compound annual growth rate from 2023 to 2027.

Medical schools and healthcare institutions are implementing AR, VR and XR training to enable repeatable immersive surgical simulations that bring valuable practice.

Having well-trained medics and other military health care professionals can mean the difference between life and death for U.S. service members. That’s why the Pentagon is eyeing augmented reality as a simulation tool to help them sharpen their skills.

In 2021, the University of Miami’s Gordon Center for Simulation and Innovation in Medical Education conducted a four-month study funded by the Defense Health Agency to examine the effectiveness of teletraining that leverages AR.

The study examined whether teletraining with augmented reality could be used to teach a new, complex procedure to a group of paramedics, Motola said. The AR technology that was used was developed by ArchieMD, a Boca Raton, Florida-based company that provides educational training products within the health sciences.

The military sector is often at the forefront of the technology landscape. When it comes to defense and the armed forces, the government is happy to invest in new growth opportunities. This includes exploring the benefits of the augmented reality military.

Even before Snapchat and Facebook started releasing filters for your pictures, and AR apps were everywhere, national armies were already implementing their own versions to train and guide their troops. As warfare continues to evolve, the defense sector needs to continue its investment in new technology all the time. Here are some insights into the impact that AR is having on modern warfare.

Knowledge management may have faded somewhat as a management imperative, but we still need to get expertise to locations where it is scarce. And finding experts, on Zoom or not, can still be challenging. Fortunately there is a new approach to capturing and disseminating knowledge about physical products. It’s called augmented reality (AR).

BAE and Red 6 announced a new collaboration to integrate the latter’s Advanced Tactical Augmented Reality Systems, or ATARS, onto the Hawk platform. It will allow pilots to see virtual adversaries and threats during live training flights. The two companies made the announcement at the National Training and Simulation Association's annual Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference in Orlando. NTSA is an affiliate of the National Defense Industrial Association.

The Red Hawk has been flying in the United Kingdom for nearly 50 years, said Lucy Walton, head of training for BAE Systems’ air sector. “We’ve really gone from analog cockpits to digital, and it’s the technology that Red 6 brings that we can start to look at how do you continue to evolve what that platform is capable of doing, which is exactly why we are collaborating with Red 6.”
BAE trains more than 450 pilots a year, and time, cost and performance are the most critical metrics, she said.

Folks who are attending the FIFA World Cup in Qatar don't have to miss out on all the player stats they'd see while watching games on TV. The FIFA+ app has an augmented reality feature that allows fans to view the likes of VAR replays and alternate camera angles.

FIFA says that only people who are attending matches in person can access the FIFA+ Stadium Experience. According to a video that has gained traction, users can point their phone's camera at the pitch. An overlay will pop up that enables them to tap on a player to see things like their movement speed and individual heatmap.

Fans in stadiums will be able to say player heatmaps in an overlay and look at replays of VAR decisions..

Augmented reality (AR) is not exactly new technology – the first functional AR systems stretch back to the early 1990s – but the situation in the defense industry has changed dramatically in recent years. Once more of a novelty than practical technology, now military contractors use AR for everything from training to manufacturing to battlefield operations, and that trend is likely to increase.

The military-electronics industry expects that growing computing power and data processing capabilities will continue to fuel the growth of augmented reality (AR) in defense. Industry insiders say that despite the fact that contractors have already found a wide range of uses for AR, they may have only scratched the surface of what this technology can do.

Arcade or home bound, capturing a truly accurate military, first person shooter experience in VR is so much more than a boon to the industry itself. It’s even a lot more than the sum of it’s benefit on training people in the military. Dare I say, that the biggest and most important impact will come in the form of how it could make users fitter than ever. This goes beyond the idea of how people in the military are fitter than most or that military training is quite possibly the most intense there is. In fact, the point here is that by making an experience that can truly capture the essence of a first person shooter game in VR could be the link that VR and Fitness need to finally be a working team together to change both industries.

For those that read my articles, you know all too well that I see VR arcades as a bastion of the industry along with the needs of it in education […]
