Today, I’m not just celebrating another birthday, I’m celebrating the journey.

Every win. Every loss. Every lesson. Every setback. Every comeback.

I’ve learned that the failures of my past weren’t meant to stop me. They were preparing me for the successes I’m experiencing today. Some things didn’t work out the way I planned, but looking back, I can see how every experience helped shape the person I’ve become.

At 43, I’m choosing to appreciate every moment. The big victories and the small ones. The people who have walked beside me. The opportunities I’ve been given. The doors that closed, the doors that opened, and even the seasons when I had to create my own door.

I’m grateful for where I’ve been, proud of how far I’ve come, and excited about where I’m going.

There’s still more to accomplish. More lives to impact. More dreams to turn into reality. More memories to make. More purpose to fulfill.

Before Quentin McDougald ever entered the classroom, an advisor told him:

“If you want to work with your homeboys, go work at the Boys & Girls Club in your hood.”

She questioned his clothes, his language and whether he belonged in education—all while he was the best-dressed person in the room.

Quentin didn’t allow her prejudice to determine his purpose. He stayed, built an 18-year career and eventually became New Britain’s first Black male District Teacher of the Year.
