Dear IFC Chapters and Potential New Members,
Fall 2021 IFC Recruitment Season is upon us. Virginia Tech Interfraternity Council’s goal is to inspire all members within the IFC community to be the best version of themselves. Key aspects of this goal are to strive for both inclusive brotherhood and equitable access to participation in recruitment for all Brothers and Potential New Members.
In our planning for Fall 2021 Recruitment, we have realized that some of the dates which IFC Recruitment events fall on intersect with Jewish Holidays. In particular, Rosh Hashanah (Sept. 6-8) and Yom Kippur (Sept. 15-16) fall within the IFC recruitment timeframe. A full schedule of Hillel at Virginia Tech High Holiday Services and Programs can be found here:
https://www.hillelatvirginiatech.org/highholidays2021.
We encourage all Chapters to consider how they can best support and include their Jewish Members and Potential New Members in recruitment events without excluding them from, or penalizing them for, cultural and religious observances.
We encourage any Potential New Members that may feel, at any time in the process, that they are in a position in which they have to choose between participating in an IFC recruitment event and observing a holiday, or expressing themselves in a cultural, religious, or personal manner to speak with the organizations directly. Potential New Members can also reach out to an IFC Executive Board member or an Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life professional staff member. It is our sincere intent to continue to make our fraternal community at Virginia Tech as inclusive and
welcoming as possible.

Dear Hokies,

The Interfraternity Council at Virginia Tech strongly condemns and denounces the acts of violence and terrorism that took place on Wednesday in our nation’s capital. This issue hits especially close to home, as many in our community live in the Washington, DC metro area. We encourage everyone to take the time needed to process these events in their own way. We encourage our fellow students to utilize the mental health resources provided by Virginia Tech Cook Counseling Center as needed, as they remain available and ready to assist- even in our virtual environment.

These heinous actions are an alarming reminder to all of us as Hokies. We must commit ourselves to resolving our differences through civil debate and reasoning. We must take the time to learn from each other and about one another. It is imperative that we embrace a spirit of cooperation and partnership while we work together to improve our campus, our communities and our world as a whole.

We are proud to be Hokies, and proud of how our peers have responded to these events. It is up to us to create change and we know that we will rise to the occasion.

In the spirit of Ut Prosim,

The Interfraternity Council at Virginia Tech Executive Board

Remembering the 32 fallen Hokies on this beautiful day in Blacksburg. We will never forget.

In the words of Nikki Giovanni:

The Hokie Nation embraces our own and reaches out with open heart and hands to those who offer their hearts and minds. We are strong, and brave, and innocent, and unafraid. We are better than we think and not quite what we want to be. We are alive to the imaginations and the possibilities. We will continue to invent the future through our blood and tears and through all our sadness.

We are the Hokies.

We will prevail.

We will prevail.

We will prevail.

We are Virginia Tech.

Great tips on hosting virtual meetings from our good friends at Phired Up!

Can’t meet in person but still need to have a chapter meeting?! No big deal. Here are some of our tips you can use to still foster human to human connection but do so virtually like you all are in the same room.

OUR TIPS:

1️⃣ Before the Meeting (a.k.a. Setting the PHIRE)

🔥 When making s’mores at a campfire, you have to stack the wood a certain way before you can light it to start the fire. The way we set up a space is just as important as the reason we are engaging in the space in the first place.
🔥 Consider your messaging to the group around the meeting before it actually begins. Steer away from messages like, “Guys, we will have a mandatory meeting. You must log in and be online or you will be fined.” Instead, encourage excitement around getting to connect with one another and try something like, “I’m excited for this new way we get to connect. Drop a selfie of your favorite quarantine and chill spot, and we’ll see you in 2 days!”

2️⃣ Beginning the Meeting (a.k.a. Lighting the PHIRE)

🔥 After we have the wood setup the way we intended, we can then take the steps necessary to light the flame.
🔥 Consider creating a playlist (ask your members for their favorite hype song) and playing it as you’re waiting for members to log onto the platform you’re using. This means you should be logged on to the platform at least 8 minutes before it begins.
🔥 Give folks time to join the platform. You may need to be flexible in starting just 3 minutes later than scheduled.

3️⃣ Keeping Folks Engaged (a.k.a. Keeping the PHIRE Lit)

🔥 Similar to keeping a fire lit, you have to keep adding wood and paying attention.
🔥 Do you have a GroupMe or platform you can track ideas, thoughts, and participation during the meeting? Consider posing a question and having members send a meme, text, or photo of their response. The engagement has to be continuous. Don’t just start the meeting with a “roses/thorns” prompt and get back to business as usual. Get creative. Be relational. Have fun.

4️⃣ The Follow Through (a.k.a. Enjoying the Product from the PHIRE)

🔥 Now that we’ve set up the fire, lit it, and kept the flames going, we can enjoy our s’mores and hopefully make more!
🔥 Thank your members for joining the meeting and participating. Yes, chapter meetings are important…and so are a million other things in people’s lives at the moment. Let’s be there for one another and offer any help, thoughts, and support in any way we possibly can. Maybe we can shoulder tap (virtually, of course) someone to lead the next meeting in sparking a flame!

The Interfraternity Council at Virginia Tech thinks it is vital we do everything in our power to support the decisions of Virginia Tech and the Commonwealth of Virginia to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Because of this, the Interfraternity Council is strongly recommending that all chapters cancel any and all social events, or any event that would require groups to congregate, until May 6, 2020.

Please see the attached statement for more information.
