The first self-service, interactive kiosk was The Plato Hotline, which was created by Murray Lappe, a student at the University of Illinois in 1977. It was developed on a PLATO system and it used a plasma touch screen, which itself was invented at the same university by another student. The kiosk allowed users to search movies, maps, directories, bus timings, activities, and the curriculum. Upon it becoming active, it is reported that more than 30,000 people, even Including teachers and tourists, queued up to try the new technology.
