Your backups ran last night. Green checkmarks all the way down.

Now answer the harder question. When did someone last restore from one and time how long it took?

Most companies find out their recovery is broken during the outage, not before it. The backup existed. The restore failed, or it took three days nobody could afford to lose.

A backup you have never tested is a hope, not a plan.

We spent $250,000 on an AI-powered threat detection platform.

State-of-the-art. Machine learning. Real-time behavioral analysis. Dashboard that looked like it belonged in a cybersecurity commercial.

Three months later, we got breached.

By a phishing email.

An employee without MFA clicked a link, entered credentials on a spoofed page, and handed attackers the keys. Our fancy AI system was too busy analyzing network packets to notice.

The Real Problem

We buy what sounds impressive in board meetings, not what actually stops breaches.

Here's what we see constantly:

Organizations with:

✅ Advanced EDR platforms

✅ SIEM systems

✅ Pe*******on testing contracts

❌ No MFA on critical systems

❌ Backups untested for 18+ months

❌ Unpatched production servers

❌ Passwords like "Company123!"

Nobody gets promoted for implementing MFA. But they absolutely get fired when ransomware hits and the "immutable" backups fail.

Why We Keep Getting This Wrong

Vendor marketing works. "AI-powered" gets budget approval. "Enable MFA" doesn't.

Complexity looks impressive. A $250K threat detection platform photographs better in presentations than "we fixed our backups."

Activity feels like progress. Buying new tools feels productive. Implementing boring fundamentals feels like maintenance.

Admitting gaps is embarrassing. "We need MFA" means you don't have it yet. "We're upgrading to advanced threat protection" sounds proactive.

What Actually Stops Breaches

The unglamorous truth:

Multi-Factor Authentication - Stops 99% of credential attacks. Cost: minimal. Board appeal: low. Value: extremely high.

Tested Backups - Ransomware becomes an inconvenience instead of a $2M disaster. But only if you've actually tested restores.

Patch Management - Closes the vulnerabilities attackers actually exploit. Prevents 60% of breaches.

Email Filtering - Stops phishing, the #1 attack vector. $3-8/user/month.

Employee Training - Reduces successful phishing 40-70%. Your last line of defense.

Total cost: $50K-75K annually for mid-sized orgs.

Compare that to one $250K platform that watches helplessly as someone clicks a phishing link.

The Questions We Should Ask

Before approving any security spending:

Do we have MFA on everything that matters?

When did we last successfully restore from backup?

How long does it take to patch critical vulnerabilities?

Can our employees identify phishing emails?

Are we buying this because it solves a problem or because it looks impressive?

That last question makes meetings uncomfortable. It also needs to be asked more often.

The Uncomfortable Truth

Security fundamentals are boring. They don't generate dashboards or use AI. They don't come with impressive sales pitches.

They just work.

You can have the most sophisticated threat detection in the world. If backups are broken, MFA isn't enabled, and employees click phishing links, you're getting breached.

And when you do, nobody cares about your AI dashboard. They'll ask why the basics weren't covered.

What's the most expensive "impressive" security tool your organization bought while ignoring obvious gaps in basic security?

And what did you learn from it?

Drop your war stories below. Let's be honest about where we've wasted money so others can learn from our expensive lessons.

Because if we keep funding security backwards, we're going to keep getting breached forwards.

About TVG: Independent technology advisory with no sales quotas. No commission on tool sales. Just honest guidance on what actually protects your business.

If you want someone to audit your security spending and tell you the truth, let's talk.

The technology landscape is shifting again.

Not in a “new tool dropped” way. In a “your job might look different in 12 months” way.

Three trends are colliding fast:

1) AI is moving from experiments to expectations
2) Security is becoming everyone’s problem (whether they like it or not)
3) Vendor sprawl is quietly draining budgets and sanity

Here’s the question we are genuinely curious about:

What’s the biggest tech challenge you’re dealing with right now, but nobody is saying out loud?

One sentence. No fluff.

We’ll go first: Most companies don’t have a tech strategy, they have a pile of renewals. 🙃

History repeats. In 1848, James W. Marshall discovered gold at Sutter’s Mill, launching the California Gold Rush. In 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT, unleashing a similar phenomenon: The “AI Gold Rush” and the “Data Center Land Grab.”

In the post-GPT world, organizations are rushing to implement AI. But today’s AI models need TONS of compute power. (OpenAI’s current models require 300,000X more compute power than they did 6 years ago!)

To meet their AI-related goals, businesses need data center space for all their AI workloads. Supply is struggling to meet demand, and data center vacancy is at an all-time low.

That’s made “pre-leasing” the new normal – with 80% of under-construction data center space ALREADY leased out.

Moral of the story: The competition for available data center space is fierce – and you can’t afford to move slowly.

Ask yourself, “Are our current AI workloads in the right place?” And more importantly: “Do we have a plan for FUTURE AI workload deployment?”

It’s the Wild West out there. Saddle up – and reach out for help navigating the new colocation frontier.

Data centers are going up all across the country – yet finding space in one is harder than ever. What gives?

Simple: The demand for center space is soaring, because organizations (big and small) know that colocation is the best option for AI workloads.

For all businesses (but especially those with sensitive data), the security and compliance benefi ts of “going colo” are key. Data center operators know exactly how to handle PCI, HIPAA, high trust, ISO, SOC, etc.

Speed to market is another big factor. Leasing colo space, even with the high demand, takes less time than building out private infrastructure with the necessary advanced cooling technology.

And then there’s cost-effectiveness. For lots of businesses, cloud costs are spiraling out of control (plus they’re super unpredictable, giving fi nance teams nightmares). Colo costs are often lower, and they’re always more predictable.

Reach out for a workload assessment, and we’ll see if colo is the right solution. (For AI, it often is!).
