Hang gliding is more than how high or far we fly. The moments we live in nature pursuing freeflight stay with you for a lifetime. The evenings with friends around a campfire, or the early morning sledrides, the occasional encounter with a Bald Eagle or your glory on a wisp of cloud beneath you all add the the freeflight experience.

In pursuit of one of the goals of this project, to promote the sport to non-pilots, I've tried to recreate some of the moments I have enjoyed in my years of hang gliding. If I can do this well enough through VR, I hope that this will convey how special this sport can be, and convince some to pursue freeflight beyond the simulation.

Here, I am experimenting with new tools and rendering techniques for a future release of Freeflight Experience, to see what is possible using today's technology.

The Freeflight Experience evolves. In response to frequent requests from flight schools and instructors, the Freeflight Experience will soon include a training site that requires no network connection to fly. Cloudbase Game Labs is developing a fictional flying site to allow use of the simulator in the field or at promotional events where a reliable internet connection is not always an option.

One of our European users has shared his local site called Schriesheim. It looks great in Freeflight Experience.

One of the ways to run Freeflight Experience if you don't own a powerful PC is to use Amazon Web Services (AWS) to host a copy of the game on a cloud PC. It costs me around 10 bucks a month, and $0.75 an hour of runtime to play this way. I rarely use this myself, but I have retained the "cloud instance" so I could help customers take advantage of this tech. It took some effort to set it up the first time, and experimentation with settings to get it running acceptably. Anyway, one of the risks of having this is if you forget to shut down the service when you are done playing, it can rack up a large bill. Yesterday, I got a notice that my bill was a bit larger than usual. Guess I will need to use some of the huge profits I have earned from the game to pay the upcoming bill. :)

As it turns out, this was not me forgetting to shut down, but rather an accounting glitch at AWS that has now been cleared up. I've gotta admit, there was some anxiety felt when I opened the email and seeing the cost.

It takes only a few minutes to add new sites to the simulator, whether it is you secret local launch or the site of an upcoming competition you wish to prepare for.

Cloudbase Game Labs, the creators of Freeflight Experience, would love to hear from you what features or capabilities you would like to see included in our future offerings. We know multiplayer support is important, but what else?

If you are following us, but not already using the software in your school or to improve your own skills, why not? What is holding you back? What would it take to get you on board?

If you are an instructor, what would make the software more effective for you when using it with your students?

How do you see yourself using a simulator? For personal use, to promote the sport in general, or as part of you instruction program?

Let us know in the comments.

After crossing Fandango pass, we drop deep into high terrain on the way north towards Lakeview. We found another pilot flying a Laminar and briefly climb together. On this virtual competition flight, we launched with 30 other pilots from Sugar, flying T3s, Laminars, Lightspeeds, and Combats toward a goal 100km north.
