October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

But cybersecurity isn't something businesses can afford to think about for only one month a year.

Every login, laptop, email, cloud application, and employee creates another place where your business needs to be protected.

The good news? Good cybersecurity doesn't have to make work harder.

Throughout October, we'll be sharing practical ways businesses can reduce risk, protect their employees, and make themselves a much harder target.

No scare tactics. No cybersecurity jargon.

Just things worth knowing.

Here's a simple way to evaluate your business technology:

Does it make your employees' jobs easier or harder?

Technology should remove steps, reduce mistakes, improve communication, protect information, and help people get work done.

If employees constantly have to work around your systems, create their own spreadsheets, remember complicated manual processes, or say "that's just how we've always done it," there's probably an opportunity to improve something.

Sometimes the answer is better IT.
Sometimes it's better software.
Sometimes it's connecting systems you already have.

That's why we do more than fix computers.

"Who handles IT?"

"Well... Dave is pretty good with computers."

We meet a lot of Daves.

Dave resets passwords. Dave sets up laptops. Dave calls the internet provider. Dave somehow became responsible for Microsoft 365.

The only problem?

Dave was hired to be the controller.

Or operations manager.

Or engineer.

Growing businesses eventually reach a point where "the person who's good with computers" isn't an IT strategy.

That's where a managed IT partner can help.

And Dave can finally get back to his actual job.

AI can make a good business process faster.

It can also make a bad business process faster.

Before adding AI to a workflow, ask a simpler question:

Does this process make sense today?

If employees are entering the same information multiple times, searching through five places for documents, or relying on a spreadsheet that only one person understands, adding AI isn't necessarily step one.

Sometimes the better first step is fixing the workflow.

Then you can decide where automation, custom software, Microsoft Copilot, or other AI tools actually add value.

Here's a 15-minute exercise worth doing with your management team:

Pretend your company can't access its computers, servers, or cloud files tomorrow morning.

What happens next?

Who does everyone call?

Can employees still communicate?

Can you access customer information?

Can you invoice?

Do you know where your backups are?

How long can the business realistically operate that way?

A disaster recovery plan shouldn't begin after the disaster.
If some of those questions are difficult to answer, that's a good place to start.

"Still working" and "should still be in production" are two very different things.

Businesses are full of technology that technically still works: old computers, aging servers, outdated network equipment, unsupported software.
The problem is that technology rarely gives you a convenient two-week notice before it fails.

Keeping an inventory of your equipment and planning replacements before they become emergencies gives you control over the timing, the budget, and the disruption.

You don't have to replace everything that's old.

You should know what's old.

Some of the most expensive software in a business isn't software at all.

It's an employee spending hours every week copying information from one system into another.

A form gets submitted. Someone enters it into a spreadsheet. Someone else enters the same information into another system. Then somebody creates a report from it.

Every manual handoff costs time and creates another opportunity for an error.

That's exactly the kind of problem custom software and automation can solve.

Before hiring another person to handle a growing administrative workload, it may be worth asking whether the process itself can be automated.

Quick cybersecurity question:

If someone left your company today, how many places would you need to remember to remove their access from?

Microsoft 365. VPN. Line-of-business software. Cloud storage. Accounting systems. Vendor portals. Shared passwords. Building systems.

And what would happen if someone forgot one?

Employee offboarding is an IT process and a security process. A documented checklist and centralized account management can make the difference between access being removed immediately and an old account sitting unnoticed for months.

Not sure what former employees can still access? That's worth finding out.
