What happens when a kid who’s carrying anger, frustration, or hurt is given somewhere to put it?

For the kids Alex Cuevas spoke with in Peru, Guardian became that place. Some came to Guardian after being bullied. Others admitted they had been the ones doing the bullying. But the stories kept coming back to the same thing: jiu-jitsu gave them an outlet, structure, and a way to turn that energy into something positive.

Instead of letting frustration turn into violence, they learned how to channel it. Instead of being defined by what they were going through, they found a community that helped them change.

Sometimes the right environment can change the direction of a life.

When membership becomes transactional, it becomes much easier for students to walk away.

In our conversation with Hanshi Dave Kovar, we talked about why building genuine relationships with your students can make all the difference when it comes to retention.

Because when you know your students, have real conversations with them, and build trust, you have an opportunity to understand what they need before they decide to leave.

Retention isn’t just about tracking attendance. It’s about building relationships that make people want to stay.

For some kids, jiu-jitsu becomes more than a sport.

It can be the place where they find confidence, discipline, mentors, and a community that gives them a different path forward.

And sometimes, the impact of a coach goes far beyond what happens on the mats. They become a role model. Someone who shows up, sets boundaries, believes in them, and gives them the support they may not be getting elsewhere.

That’s what makes programs like Guardian so powerful.

Because changing a kid’s life doesn’t always start with a big intervention. Sometimes, it starts with giving them a place to belong.

You can have the best marketing in the world… and still lose members.

Getting someone through the door is only half the battle. The real product is the experience they have once they’re there.

The relationships you build.
The quality of every class.
The way your instructors make students feel seen, supported, and motivated to come back.

Marketing gets people in, the experience keeps them there.

What are you doing to make your classroom an experience students don’t want to leave?

Starting a gym is hard.

Scaling one without losing members, drowning in admin, or overlooking the things that quietly cost you new business? That’s a whole different challenge.

On September 25, William Watts and Chris Wojcik are sitting down for a real, unscripted conversation about what actually works when you’re starting and scaling a gym.

They’ll get into:

🥋 How to onboard new members so they actually stick around
📈 The blind spots that can cost you new members
🗓️ Why class times matter more than you think
🌐 How your website could be turning prospects away
💬 And the questions gym owners are actually asking

Plus, there’ll be a LIVE Q&A, so you can bring your own questions to the conversation.

Starting or scaling a gym? This one’s for you.

Jiu-jitsu can be about so much more than learning how to fight.

While visiting Guardian Project’s academies in Peru, Alex heard story after story about what jiu-jitsu gives kids beyond the mats: structure, community, confidence, and an alternative to the paths they could otherwise fall into.

For some kids, it’s a place to belong. For others, it’s a place to learn limits, discipline, and how to channel what they’re feeling.

Seeing that impact firsthand made Alex ask a simple question: how can we give back?

That’s what the Guardian Project is doing: bringing jiu-jitsu to communities that may not otherwise have access to it, supporting academies, coaches, and kids along the way.

New Gym Owner Essentials: Q & A
"What is gym access control software?"

Gym access control software lets you decide who can open which doors at your gym, and enforces it automatically based on each member's membership status. It's what makes 24/7 and unstaffed hours possible without handing out keys.

Members tap a fob on the reader by your door or unlock from their phone. The system checks their membership at that moment, opens the door, and logs the entry as attendance.

Could you use this feature at your gym? We're giving away free 30-day trials if you want to try it out this month. Link in bio.
