When we started working with African American Youth Harvest Foundation in East Austin, they were paying four separate carrier contracts to keep one building connected, on top of overloaded servers and unreliable email.

A quick one for Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

When did somebody at your business last restore a file from your backup, on purpose, as a test?

Not whether a backup exists. Whether anyone has watched it come back.

Which one applies to your business?

• In the last 3 months
• In the last year
• Longer ago than that
• Honestly, not sure

Reply in the comments with your answer.

No judgment on any answer. The last two are extremely common at growing businesses, because the backup was set up once by someone who then got busy with their actual job.

It is worth a twenty-minute test this month.

The phishing email that works is not the one with the odd greeting and the foreign prince.

It is a reply inside a thread you already started. Same subject line, real history, and a new message asking you to look at an attachment.

Or an invoice from a supplier your accounting team recognizes, for a plausible amount, where the only thing that changed is the bank account on the remittance page.

These land on careful people because they ask for one small, reasonable action at a moment when that action fits. That is a design problem, not an intelligence problem, which is why blaming whoever clicked does not help anyone.

Two habits handle the whole category: verify anything involving money or access on a second channel, and make reporting a suspicious message easy and consequence-free. The useful report is the one that arrives ten minutes after a click.
