Chicago Northwest serves locations between Mundelein and Woodstock, Barrington / Algonquin and the WI state line Paul Nelis is the owner of the Chicago Northwest territory of CMIT Solutions. Paul brings more than 35 years of IT and business experience to his customers in the area, and collaborates closely with other franchisees across the nation. While Paul started out on the Help Desk of a french bank, he quickly rose to run that help desk, before moving into consulting, where he helped companies world-wide with client server and database design, implementation, and performance management. It was in this role that Paul first ran a managed service, for Allstate Insurance Company. Managed Services have been part of his career ever since, whether developing, selling and running them for consulting companies or acquiring them as part of a corporate strategy for infrastructure management. He’s run Managed Services for the likes of Allstate, McDonald’s Corp, the states of Rhode Island, and New York. Paul has direct experience in consumer packaged goods, logistics, manufacturing, food service, finance, state and local government, retail, healthcare, legal, pharma, and other industry verticals. Most recently, concluding a term as the CIO for a $750 million healthcare company, Paul decided to bring his consulting and managed services skills to the companies close to his home, in Wauconda, IL.

A guest Wi-Fi network shouldn't simply have a different name and password. It should be properly separated from the network containing your business systems and sensitive information.

Ask yourself:
✔️ Do we have a dedicated guest network?
✔️ Do we change the password periodically?
✔️ Is it separated from our business network?
✔️ Do we actually know how it's configured?

If that last answer is "I'm not sure," that's a good question to bring to an IT professional.

Convenient Wi-Fi shouldn't create unnecessary access to your business.

Good IT documentation can include important information about your systems, devices, vendors, configurations, network, and procedures. If you already have someone managing your stuff, ask to see these diagrams. It’s a big red flag if they don’t have them.

Without them, troubleshooting can take longer, transitions can become more difficult, and important knowledge may exist only in someone's head. We’ve seen that really hurt some businesses.

Then ask:
✔️ Are we still using all of it?
✔️ Are we paying for licenses assigned to former employees?
✔️ Are multiple programs doing essentially the same job?
✔️ Do we know who has administrator access?

Today’s lunch view may not include the Irish countryside, but I can certainly reminisce!

This very satisfying burger came from one of our favorite stops in Doolin, Fitz’s Pub, not far from the Cliffs of Moher. We’ve eaten there a few times over the years, and I don’t think I’ve ever made a bad menu decision.

Of course, lunch at Fitz’s isn't just about the food. It also means getting a Dooliner Red; a locally made red ale you can only find in Doolin and one of my favorite beers I've had anywhere.

So while I figure out what's for lunch today, I'll be wishing the answer was:
A burger, a Dooliner Red, and a table at an Irish pub.

That's not too much to ask, right?
