For Cybersecurity Awareness Month, let's start with four things that almost anyone can understand:

Use strong, unique passwords
Turn on multi-factor authentication
Pay attention before clicking unexpected links
Keep your software updated

That's it.

Throughout October, we'll take some of this stuff apart, explain what actually matters, test you with a few scams, and hopefully make cybersecurity feel a little less confusing.
Because you shouldn't need to work in IT to understand how to protect yourself online.

Here’s a little experiment for your Monday.

Search your business online, but look at the results like someone who doesn’t work there.
How quickly can you figure out who works there? What they do? Who the leadership team is? How your email addresses are formatted?

None of that automatically means something is wrong. A lot of it is normal business information.

But it’s a good reminder of why a random email that knows your name, your boss’s name, or where you work isn’t automatically trustworthy.

The more convincing something looks, the more important it is to slow down and verify it.

It’s Friday. We know you’re mentally already out the door. So we’ll keep this one short.

Save your work. Secure your computer. Don’t leave anything sensitive sitting around your desk. Then go enjoy the weekend.

We’ll handle the complicated IT stuff

We hear versions of this all the time.
“Why would anyone bother with a business our size?”

Because cybercriminals aren’t necessarily looking for the biggest company in West Virginia. They’re looking for an opportunity. And smaller businesses don’t always have someone dedicated to cybersecurity watching what’s happening behind the scenes.

You don’t need to become a cybersecurity expert. You just need to know where your risks are and have a plan for them.

We clean out closets in the fall. Your business technology could probably use a little attention too.

Old accounts, updates you’ve clicked “later” on one too many times, access that hasn’t been reviewed in a while, little things have a way of piling up.

So consider this your fall IT reset.
Pick one thing on this list and take care of it this week. Your future self may be very glad you did.

You don’t have to become a cybersecurity expert every time you open your inbox.

If a message is unexpected, the sender looks strange, or it’s suddenly pushing you to click, pay, sign in, or respond immediately, give yourself a second before doing anything.

When you’re unsure, verify the request another way instead of using what’s inside the suspicious message.

IT people love an acronym. Everyone else would just like to know what we’re talking about.

So here’s the normal-human version of a few terms you might hear when talking about your business technology.

Which IT term should we translate next?

We’ve all been personally victimized by the “update now” notification at the worst possible time.

But there’s a reason your IT team keeps asking about updates. They can include fixes for security vulnerabilities along with bug fixes and improvements. The FTC recommends keeping business software, apps, browsers, and operating systems updated.

So yes, you can hit “remind me later.”
Just maybe not for the next six months.

Okay, who has done this before?

Password1 becomes Password2… then Password3.
It’s easy to remember, but it also means your accounts aren’t really getting unique passwords.

A better habit is to use strong, unique passwords for different accounts, use a password manager to help manage them, and enable multi-factor authentication when it’s available.

Small cybersecurity habits can make a meaningful difference.
Save this one for your next password reset.

Take 30 seconds and check yourself.

How many of these are already part of your normal workday?

Cybersecurity doesn’t always start with something complicated. Basic habits like using multi-factor authentication, keeping software updated, protecting passwords, and thinking before clicking can all play a role in protecting business information.

Save this one. Better yet, send it to your team.
