Sunday afternoon and the Zerg are through the wall.

StarCraft: The Miniatures Game on the tables today. A line of Terran marines and firebats dug in behind a ruin with a swarm coming at them from both sides, which is roughly how that matchup goes right up until it doesn't.

Half the models on that table are still bare grey plastic and that is exactly how it should be. Nobody waits for an army to be painted before they play it. You get a box, you put it together, you find out the hard way what a pack of hydralisks does to a squad that left its flank open.

Three factions and none of them play alike. Terran digs in and makes you pay for every inch. Zerg does not care what it costs. Protoss turns up with fewer models and better ones.

The tables are here and somebody is usually around who will happily walk you through a first game.

So which are you: Terran, Zerg or Protoss? There is no wrong answer, but there is a correct one.

The new BattleTech Core Rulebook has landed.

Forty years on, and it's still the only game that makes you choose between firing everything and cooking your own pilot. Everybody else's rules ask what you want to shoot. This one asks what you're willing to survive.

Your mech loses an arm and keeps walking. The gyro goes and you're rolling just to stay upright. Armour peels away section by section until there's a hole somewhere that matters. Nothing in BattleTech dies cleanly, and that is precisely the point.

A new core rulebook is the easiest moment in years to start. One book, all of it, no hunting through decades of supplements.

On the shelf at the flagship now.

So what are you piloting?

Eight tables, set and ready before the first dice went down this morning.

This is what the RTT looked like at eleven o'clock. Ice fields, ruined industrial sprawl, green-lit xenos architecture, and a different board waiting on every one of them.

We build these because a game played on a proper table is a different game. You remember the match you fought across a city in flames. You forget the one you played on a bare mat with some boxes for cover.

Good luck to everyone playing today.
