Top Gun came out the weekend I graduated from boot camp in San Diego in 1986.

The experiences we accumulate over time impact every aspect of our lives.

You don’t have to manufacture a story. You’re living one now.

Some business investments create value over time. That means delay has a cost beyond the invoice you avoided today. Another year can mean another year without accumulated search visibility, useful data, audience growth, stronger systems, or better digital assets. If you’re preparing to build or rebuild, start with the free Before You Build It book. The question isn’t only, “What will this cost?” Ask, “What does waiting cost?”

Top Gun came out the weekend I graduated from Navy boot camp in San Diego in 1986.

So when I hear Tom Cruise is returning to another one of those movies from my younger years, it hits a little differently.

Nearly 40 years later, I’ve realized how much the experiences we accumulate become part of what we bring to our businesses. You don’t have to manufacture an interesting founder story. You probably already have one.

The trick is recognizing which parts of it matter.

What’s a movie, song, place or moment that instantly takes you back to the beginning of a chapter in your life?

AI has become useful enough that the interesting business question is no longer whether companies should use it.

The better question is where it creates leverage.

AI can accelerate research, analysis, content development, customer communication, workflow, and decision support. But speed only helps when the work is pointed toward the right objective.

If the business problem is misunderstood, AI can help you execute the wrong solution remarkably quickly.

Leadership still has to determine what outcome matters, what evidence should be trusted, which assumptions need testing, and what decision the information supports.

That is where I believe AI becomes most valuable: experienced people using better tools to make and execute better decisions.

If you’re looking at AI across your marketing or growth systems, tell me what you’re trying to accomplish. That’s where the conversation should begin.

A business can change dramatically in ten years.

The website should not assume the company will always remain exactly as it is today.

Offers evolve.

Teams grow.

New products appear.

Customer needs change.

Marketing channels change.

Technology changes.

The goal is not to predict every future requirement.

It is to make foundational decisions that preserve options.

Ownership.

Scalable architecture.

Strong content structure.

Analytics.

Search foundations.

Integrations.

A technology stack capable of growing with the business.

Sometimes the smartest first move is small and fast.

The important part is making sure that first move does not trap the next ten.

If you are building something you hope will still matter a decade from now, send me a message. That is exactly the kind of business I want to help build.

Dolly Parton understood something every entrepreneur and creator eventually has to learn: an opportunity isn’t automatically a good opportunity because a famous name is attached to it.

She was willing to walk away from Elvis Presley to protect the publishing rights to I Will Always Love You. Years later, Whitney Houston’s recording took the song to an entirely different level.

That’s ownership.

What would you have done? Elvis wants your song, but the deal costs you half the publishing. Easy decision from the outside. A lot harder when Elvis Presley is on the other side of the table.

Growth is not only about getting more attention. It is also about making sure the business can handle and measure the opportunity it creates.

Competitive research should change decisions.

If it does not influence the offer, positioning, messaging, search strategy, content plan, customer journey, or website architecture, it is probably not deep enough.

My goal with Competitive Growth Research is to understand what the market is already telling us before we commit to ex*****on.

Who is competing?

What are they saying?

Where are they visible?

What are customers searching?

What language do people use?

What gaps appear in the market?

How can the business enter with greater clarity?

The research becomes valuable when it helps us make a better move.

If you are launching into a competitive market or rebuilding because the first approach never differentiated you, send me a message.

Launch day gets all the attention.

The first week deserves some too.

That is when a website starts interacting with real visitors, real devices, real customer questions, and real business processes.

A proper stabilization period gives us time to confirm forms, email delivery, analytics, indexing, performance, mobile behavior, and the practical handoff to the business owner.

It also gives us our first glimpse of what real users are doing.

That information becomes useful quickly.

If you want a website project that includes thinking beyond the moment the launch button gets pushed, send me a message.

The first week is part of the build.
