--Network Upgrade--

We apologize for some intermittent outages in recent days and this morning. We have been making network upgrades to speed the routing of internet traffice, and making provisions to allow us to offer public IP addresses. The latter is a feature often requested by gamers, but is also helpful to businesses. Stay tuned for our announcement when this new service will be available.

--Second Outage--
Our fiber provider is working a second cable cut that happened about 12:50 pm this afternoon. They have no estimated restoration time as of yet. This outage is affecting many others in our region including some other internet service providers. We are sending prompt emails to notify every subscriber of these outages and restorations. If you are not receiving them, please check your junk mail folder and be sure to add [email protected] to your safe email list.

--Network Outage and Restoration--

Our fiber provider had to perform emergency maintenance this morning, and our internet connection was down from midnight to 7:35 am. If you are still experiencing problems, please reboot your radio to encourage it to reattach to our network. If you need assistance, call 601-686-2503. We apologize for the inconvenience.

-- Google commanded network outage--

Over the past 2 days we have had rolling outages affecting many of our subscribers. The root problem is with Google and seems to have been fixed as of this morning, but we also have taken measures to reduce our vulnerability in the future.

In a nutshell, Google has been given authority by the FCC to monitor and control use of a certain band of frequencies being used by many wireless internet service providers, including us. They are supposed to maintain sensors that detect when there is interference and command offending radios to shift frequencies or shut down. Their sensors in our region have been intermittently failing, and this has caused them to randomly command waves of subscriber radios across four states to shut down for no good reason.

We are vigorously engaged with Google and the FCC to provide details of the failures and their impact on our operations and subscribers. We are also working with our radio manufacturers to optimize the way they handle these occurrences. Last night we reprogrammed all our tower radios to have more flexibility to shift frequencies instead of being shut down, and they will carry the subscriber radios with them if we have a recurrence.

Per our Terms and Conditions of Service, we are willing to issue bill credits for significant interruptions of service proportional to time you are offline due to our equipment. If you were affected and desire a credit, please contact us and we will confirm your outage duration from our radio logs and issue the credit.

Thank you for your support.

--Broadband Update--

We are pleased to report that our wireless broadband network has been operating smoothly and delivering good service to our subscribers since we worked out the last of the major bugs in May. It is not perfect -- we average 1 to 2 subscriber trouble calls per day -- but the issue is usually solved with a simple radio or router reboot. At this moment, our connection tracking system shows 171 of our 172 subscribers online, and we have already reached out to the one offline via email instead of waiting for them to call us. We continue to add new subscribers and have had no cancellations since May. We are also pleased to report that monthly revenue has exceeded expenses since June, so the operation is financially self-sufficient and has begun to pay down its construction debt.

If you wander over to our website at https://nlwi.ms, you will see we have updated the coverage map to show current subscribers, and also to show our members in the Lauderdale Community that we cannot yet reach and where EMEPA fiber is not coming (MS Power customers). We have developed a plan to construct an additional tower to deliver wireless broadband to this area.

This operation is non-profit and very lean to keep costs low. The only way to expand is with the assistance of grant funds, just as was necessary for the original project. If you would like to support our efforts to get this funding from the American Rescue Plan grant money coming to Lauderdale County and the state government specifically prioritized for water, sewer, and broadband projects, your courteous email of support to Supervisor Wayman Newell at [email protected] would be helpful. Also, comments on this post are welcome. Your board answers to you our members, and we only want to pursue projects with member support and mutual benefit to the broader community.

--Ready To Serve More Subscribers--

We are pleased to announce that we are now serving more than 100 residential subscribers, two churches, and two commercial enterprises. We have built a robust network with excess capacity and have worked hard over the past 5 months to master the complex technology of 4G LTE and 5G radios and optimize their performance. We are seeing traffic flowing freely from the internet to our subscribers and back, and setting new network throughput records weekly, as we add subscribers.

At this point we have caught up to our backlog of pre-registrations and new inquiries. We have a full-time installer and, in most cases, are installing within 24 hours of payment of the install charge. For the small percentage of people who we have not been able to get a strong enough radio signal to serve reliably because of excessive trees or hills, we are working on a couple of pole options to get our antenna higher.

If you are looking for true broadband service, with much higher speeds than DSL and no data limits and throttling like satellite, and like the idea of dealing with a local nonprofit instead of a corporate giant, we might be a good match.

--Updated Terms and Conditions of Service (TACOS)--

Version 1.1 of the TACOS dated 3/17/2021 is now in effect and is posted on the NLWI website at https://www.nlwi.ms/documents/terms-and-conditions-of-service/. The only substantive change was to the attached Easement form. The new language now clarifies that no NLWI equipment will be placed on any subscriber's property except at the invitation of the property owner. This was always clear in the body of the TACOS, but we wanted to make it perfectly clear in the Easement form as well. Since this change is purely in favor of individual subscribers, rather than NLWI, we are putting it into immediate effect without a waiting period. Existing subscribers do not need to resubmit any forms.

--Ice Storm Debrief--

Our network is again fully operational. All our equipment weathered the storms without damage. All outages were related to loss of grid power. Our equipment is largely co-located with our water plants, which have priority for power restoration during such storms. All four plants suffered power outages ranging from 17 hours to 56 hours. Using a combination of the 12-hrs of backup battery capacity we built into each tower and two portable generators, we were able to reduce the total outage time. Of our four towers, we kept one up continuously, one suffered only a 30-min outage, one was out for 6 hr, and one with a single subscriber on it was out for 55 hr. We had an overlapping network outage at the beginning of the storm due to the failure of a fiber optic switch owned by our fiber provider. It failed due to a power surge and they would not send anyone to replace it for 36 hours due to the weather.

Thank you for hanging in there with us.
