Welcome to Freelance Friday!

This week, I want to showcase the team with Cancer Services of Eastern North Carolina. In 2023, I teamed up with Lynn Moore-Pischke, LLC and the Cancer Services of Eastern NC crew to develop their new logo. The choice of lavender represents all cancers, and acts as a symbol of support and awareness.

The team members and volunteers are committed to lightening the burden of a cancer diagnosis for a patient, family or caregiver. For more information, visit cancerservicesofeasternnc.com

Welcome to Freelance Friday! 2027 marks my 20th year as a graphic designer, so leading up to that, I thought it would be fun to showcase and spotlight some of my favorite projects over the years, not just to show off, but to also say thank you to the people who have made this such an amazing journey.

A Place at the Table was started in 2015 with a mission to provide community and good food to all, regardless of means. Spearheaded by Maggie Kane, with the goal of creating a different kind of soup kitchen. In 2018, the flagship cafe opened in downtown Raleigh serving the entire community as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Way back in 2025, A Place At The Table Cafe held a design contest for the new volunteer t-shirt. I am happy to say this the winning design. The concept of the piece shows the various chairs representing all walks of life and that they have a place at A Place at the Table.

In 2022, I teamed up with Justin Pritchard to develop his new business identity, Bald Head Threads. We had a fantastic back-and-forth during the mascot ideation phase, where we ultimately decided he should be the literal face of the company. Said company is a veteran-owned, custom embroidery and sewing business based in Greenville, NC that creates custom apparel, monogrammed goods, and other stitched designs.

In 2013, The gay? fine by me poster series/campaign could and would not have happened without the support and team work of an amazing group of East Carolina students and staff. Period. Starting at the beginning, the LGBT Resource Office (now the ECU Dr. Peel LGBTQ Center Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center) wanted to create/implement a new campaign for gay? fine by me, however, budgetary restraints would not allow for both a series of large banners and print materials/posters. The solution was to create a series of 11” x 17” posters, utilizing the colors of the then Pride flag (red, orange, yellow, blue, green, and purple) that could be placed individually or connect to create a large banner with overlapping photos to connect the posters. The outpouring of support was astounding. In order to pull off this concept, we worked with the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center to stage a massive photo shoot with faculty, staff, and students (as well as scheduling other shoots at different locations on campus) all participating by wearing their own gay? fine by me tees or borrowing from the stack we had on hand. Those who could not attend personally emailed photos of themselves with their tees. This was a campus-wide event from then-Chancellor Ballard to incoming freshmen joining in and contributing to the design. I am extremely proud to have been a part of this project and the continued opportunity to work with students and staff at the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center whenever possible.

Welcome to Freelance Friday!

“I’m going to start a podcast.” And with that sentence (and her characteristic determination) Dannah Vaughan took her first steps toward what is today 3 years, 75 episodes, 16k followers, heard in 15 different countries, the 🎙 Rebels of SaaS - Platform and Podcast podcast.

Dannah is currently doing her thing with Customer Success Collective at their Customer Success Festival in the UK. That’s right, she’s international.

So if you’re reading this, chances are you’re one of the many rebels Dannah reaches. Or about to be.

Welcome to Freelance Friday!

Nostalgia Newsstand Nostalgia Newsstand has been serving Eastern North Carolina’s comic book and collectible needs for nearly 50 years. The shop can be found at 1322 E 10th St, Greenville, NC.

When the store moved, owner Juan Lopez felt it was time for more than just a location update. I was brought in to refresh the logo; pairing classic comic type, certain heroic color palettes, and inspired by printing techniques (ben day dots were used in older printing formats utilizing small colored dots (typically cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) that are variously spaced and combined to create shading and colors in images most notably comic books) to bring the classic in with modern. Bonus points if you can identify the origin of the main Nostalgia type (drop it in the comments).

This week is a big one for comic fans. HeroesCon Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find is going on in Charlotte, NC. Creators from almost every era of comics will be present, including guest panels, and signings. Treat yourself to a one-of-a-kind experience. If you see Juan and the Nostalgia team out there, tell them Josh sent you.

Founded in 2019, Local Oak is a nano brewery in the heart of downtown Winterville, NC. The brewery takes it’s name from the 150 year old oak tree that sits on the property. This landmark was the obvious choice for the logo as that the location is a cool place to hang out, much like the shade from the giant tree. I consider myself lucky to have collaborated with the original owners, Amy & Ben, to develop a variety of occasionally off-kilter promotional items (I may do a follow up with the 80’s V***r Wave and Possom pieces) that were a part of the atmosphere and showed off the unique qualities of their intentionally tiny brewery. In recent years, Local Oak has joined the Uptown Brewing Company family along with their newest location in Farmville, NC Yard Dog Brewing .
