We had just about gotten caught up on Friday. The bench was clearing, machines were going home, and for a minute there we could see the table. 😅

Then Friday morning happened. Drop off after drop off, and just like that the whole table was full again. Desktops, laptops, tablets, all of it. 🖥️💻

We are not complaining even a little. Every one of those machines means somebody chose a local shop on Detroit Rd instead of a big box counter or a phone number on a screen. Some of you have been coming to us since 2009. Some of you found us last week. Some of you sent your neighbor, your mom, or your coworker. That is the only reason we are still here doing this. ❤️

So thank you. Truly. We know you have options and we do not take it for granted.

We see this one every single week, and here is the thing: that message is REAL. It is not a fake pop-up. Windows 7 stopped getting security updates back in January 2020. 😬

Two laptops on the bench this week. One is well over a decade old. One is only a few years old. 💻

The question we get more than any other: "Is it even worth fixing?"

Honest answer, nobody can tell you that over the phone. Not us, not the store, not the guy on the forum. Two laptops can look identical and have completely different outcomes once they are opened up and tested. Age is not what decides it. What is actually wrong with it decides it.

We still bring older machines back every week. We also see newer ones that need a real look before anyone can say what the right move is. Either way you find out by testing it, not by guessing at the year on the sticker.

So we test it first and then we call you and tell you in plain English what it needs and whether it makes sense. If it is not worth repairing, we will say so straight, and we will still get your files off it either way.

🖥️ NEW COMPUTER? DON’T LOSE EVERYTHING ON THE OLD ONE.

This is a real job on the bench this week. Customer’s laptop quit on them, so they bought a new one, and every photo and document they own was still sitting inside the dead machine. 61,000 files, 211 GB, all copying over right now. 📂

Here’s what most people don’t know: your old computer does NOT have to turn on for us to get your stuff. The hard drive is a separate part from the screen, the keyboard, or the motherboard. When those fail, your data is usually sitting there perfectly fine. We pull the drive, hook it up directly, and move everything to the new machine. ✅

What comes over:

📸 Photos and videos (including the ones buried in random folders)

📄 Documents, spreadsheets, PDFs, tax files

📧 Email, including Outlook mail

🔖 Bookmarks, favorites, and saved logins

💰 QuickBooks and Quicken files, with the software reinstalled properly so everything opens right up

🖨️ Printer, scanner, and all your devices set back up

And we set the new computer up the RIGHT way: bloatware removed, every Windows update installed, real security software, local account if you don’t want a Microsoft account, and we sit down and show you what changed.

⚠️ Whatever you do, do NOT throw out or trade in the old computer until the data is off it. We can’t get it back once it’s gone.

Bring both machines in, or just bring us the old one. Most transfers are done in a day or two.

⚠️ One of these came out of a customer's laptop this week. Can you tell which one?

Look at the middle battery. That bulge is not supposed to be there.

A swollen laptop battery is a lithium cell that has failed and started venting gas inside its own pouch. As it grows it pushes up against the trackpad and keyboard, warps the bottom cover, and in bad cases cracks the case open. It is also a fire risk. We pull several of these out every month and most owners had no idea anything was wrong until the trackpad stopped clicking right.

Signs your laptop battery is going:

🔋 Runtime dropped from hours to minutes

🔌 It only runs while plugged into the wall

🖱️ The trackpad feels stiff, raised, or won't click

📐 The laptop rocks or wobbles on a flat table

🔥 It runs hotter than it used to

That Lenovo in the background? Fresh battery, back to normal, going home to its owner.

If your laptop is showing any of those signs, please don't keep using it and don't try to pull the battery yourself. Swollen cells are punctured easily and that is exactly what you don't want to happen. Bring it in and we'll handle it safely, test the battery health, and recycle the old one properly.

💻 Busy Monday at Computer Crisis!

We started the day out on an onsite call before the shop even opened, and the second we unlocked the doors at 10 AM the dropoffs did not stop. Laptops, desktops, virus and scam cleanups, hardware repairs... they just kept coming through the door.

We are not complaining one bit. 🙌

“It won’t turn on.”

That’s one of the most common calls we get, and it almost never means what people think it means. 🔌

This batch came in two flavors. Some were completely dead: no lights, no fans, nothing. Others powered right up and then just sat there on a black screen.

Every single one of them left here working.

Dead with no power is usually a failed power supply on a desktop, or a bad charging port or battery on a laptop. Powers on with a black screen is usually memory, a graphics card, a dead boot drive, or on a laptop, the screen itself. Different problems, both very fixable.

And the question everyone actually wants answered: your files are almost always fine. The drive is separate from the parts that fail in a no-power situation.

Before you spend $700 on a new one, let us look at it. Desktops and laptops, any brand, any age.

Remember Windows XP? 💾 This Sony VAIO sure does!

It came into the shop completely dead…wouldn’t power on at all.

And it wasn’t just any old computer: our customer runs crucial business software that ONLY works on this exact XP machine. (No worries, it never touches the internet. One job, does it well.)

We opened it up, repaired it, and got that classic XP boot screen glowing again with every file intact. 💙
