🚨 "The pop-up won't close and my computer is beeping."

We get this call constantly. A warning takes over the whole screen, sometimes with an alarm sound, and it tells you to call a phone number. The window won't close no matter what you click.

Two things we'd tell you right now:

Don't call the number on the screen.
Don't let anyone you don't already know connect to your computer over the internet.

Whatever that message says, it isn't telling you what's actually on your computer. The only way to know is to scan it, and that's what we do when you bring it in. 💻

Same goes for the slower version of this: ads on sites that never had ads, tabs opening on their own, alerts popping up even with the browser closed.

🖥️ Windows 11 asks you about a dozen questions while it installs, and almost everybody clicks Next on every single one.

This is a customer's computer on our bench this week, stopped right on the privacy settings screen. Location. Find my device. Diagnostic data. Four switches, and more screens after it.

Here is the thing. A few of those choices decide where your files live, whether you can get back into your own computer later, and why your storage suddenly says it's full. The number one reason someone walks in saying "my files disappeared" traces straight back to a box that got checked during setup. 😬

We handle Windows 11 installs either way. Brand new computer still in the box, or the Windows 10 machine you already own and want to keep. Files moved over, programs reinstalled, printer working, email signed in, Start menu set up so it doesn't feel like somebody else's computer.

🔒 Blue screen asking for a BitLocker recovery key? Your files are not gone.

This one came into the shop this week. The laptop boots straight to a blue BitLocker recovery screen and will not go one step further without a 48 digit key the owner never knew existed.

Here is the part people do not realize when they see that screen. The drive is still sitting there full of everything you had. Photos, documents, tax files, work stuff, all of it. The computer just will not hand any of it over until the encryption side gets dealt with the right way. Guessing at that screen or hitting the wrong recovery option can turn a recoverable machine into a wiped one.

So do not fight it. Bring the computer in and we will tell you exactly where you stand and what your options are.

Almost every week someone walks in holding a laptop they've already given up on. Screen cracked. Won't charge. Won't turn on. Takes ten minutes to load the desktop. They're expecting us to say buy a new one.

🚨 "Your PC is infected with 5 viruses!"

This came up on a laptop that came into our shop this week. If your computer is throwing warnings like this at you, here is the problem: the popup itself tells you nothing about what is actually on your machine. It could be nothing. It could be a lot.

The only way to know is to look.

Bring it in and we will:
✅ Get the popups and pop-under ads off the computer
✅ Run a full scan to find out whether anything is really there
✅ Remove whatever turns up
✅ Check what is running in the background and starting up with Windows
✅ Tell you exactly what we found

One thing before you bring it in: do not call any phone number that shows up in a popup, and do not let anyone connect to your computer over the internet. That is how a slow computer turns into a drained bank account.

We had just about gotten caught up on Friday. The bench was clearing, machines were going home, and for a minute there we could see the table. 😅

Then Friday morning happened. Drop off after drop off, and just like that the whole table was full again. Desktops, laptops, tablets, all of it. 🖥️💻

We are not complaining even a little. Every one of those machines means somebody chose a local shop on Detroit Rd instead of a big box counter or a phone number on a screen. Some of you have been coming to us since 2009. Some of you found us last week. Some of you sent your neighbor, your mom, or your coworker. That is the only reason we are still here doing this. ❤️

👀 Seen this screen? You are not alone.

"Your Windows 7 PC is out of support."

We see this one every single week, and here is the thing: that message is REAL. It is not a fake pop-up. Windows 7 stopped getting security updates back in January 2020. 😬

The computer still turns on. It still gets email. It still prints. So why bother?

Two laptops on the bench this week. One is well over a decade old. One is only a few years old. 💻

The question we get more than any other: "Is it even worth fixing?"

Honest answer, nobody can tell you that over the phone. Not us, not the store, not the guy on the forum. Two laptops can look identical and have completely different outcomes once they are opened up and tested. Age is not what decides it. What is actually wrong with it decides it.

We still bring older machines back every week. We also see newer ones that need a real look before anyone can say what the right move is. Either way you find out by testing it, not by guessing at the year on the sticker.

So we test it first and then we call you and tell you in plain English what it needs and whether it makes sense. If it is not worth repairing, we will say so straight, and we will still get your files off it either way.
