Twenty minutes doesn't feel like a problem. A dozen times a week, it's four hours.

By Sarah Agan's count, that was the math at Iowa Radiology. Their breast health letters only worked if radiologists dictated in the exact order the pick list expected. Say timeframe before laterality, and the letter needed fixing. A tech flagged it, IT got pulled in, and someone followed up to make sure it got done.

Then there was the checking nobody counted. Her team was hand-checking letters before they went out.

"I don't think we realized how much work we were doing."

Now AI reads the dictation however the radiologist says it. One word out of place no longer breaks the letter, and the hand-checks stopped. Sarah says that time is going back to patients.
