Your website might look fine, and still be frustrating to use.

Here’s a quick audit you can run in about ten minutes:

1. Open your site on a real phone.
Check the menu, buttons, forms, and text. Is anything cramped, cut off, or hard to tap?

2. Try to complete one important task.
Contact you, donate, book an appointment, or find your hours. Notice where you hesitate, or get stuck.

3. Put the mouse away and use only your keyboard.
Press Tab to move through the page. Can you tell where you are? Can you reach every link, button, and form field?

4. Mute the sound.
If a video or audio clip starts playing, can visitors still understand the important information without hearing it? Captions and visible text matter.

5. Read the homepage out loud.
Does the wording sound clear and natural? Can you quickly tell what you do, who you help, and what someone should do next?

You don’t need fancy software for this. You need ten minutes, a phone, and a willingness to notice where your visitors might be doing extra work.

Try the check and tell us in the comments: which step found the biggest problem on your website?

Friday vibes for everyone in the after-hours website update club.

You’ve finished the workday, answered the messages, helped the customers, served the community, and then you log in to update your own website.

Maybe you’re adding next week’s hours. Posting an event. Updating a form. Fixing one tiny detail that somehow took three clicks and a password reset.

Small business owners, nonprofit staff, and volunteers: we see the care behind those updates. Keeping your website current helps people find the information they need, when they need it.

So here’s to the people doing important digital housekeeping after hours. Your work matters, and your communities notice.

Who deserves a shout-out for keeping their organization’s website up to date? Tag them below. 👏

Your homepage headline shouldn’t make visitors play detective.

A lot of headlines describe the company instead of explaining the result:

“Innovative solutions for modern businesses.”

That sounds polished. It also tells a visitor almost nothing.

Try this instead:

“Accessible websites that help small organizations get found and get things done.”

Here’s the simple test:
Can someone visiting your homepage answer these questions in a few seconds?

• Is this for me?
• What do I get?
• What problem does it help solve?

A few more before-and-after examples:

Before: “Quality care for every stage of life.”
After: “Primary care for families who want straightforward, ongoing support.”

Before: “Creative solutions for your business.”
After: “Clear brand and website design for small businesses ready to grow.”

Before: “Building stronger communities together.”
After: “Local programs that connect neighbors with food, housing, and support.”

Your headline doesn’t need to explain everything. It just needs to make the next step obvious.

What does your homepage headline say right now? Share it in the comments, or rewrite it using this formula:

We help [who] get [what result].

Your website may be quietly turning visitors away, and you might not know why.

That’s what Twist Scan is for.

It’s a free website test that checks one public web page against common WCAG 2.2 requirements. Enter your website address, and you’ll get a plain-language read on what’s working and what may be shutting people out.

No jargon. No guessing. No paying someone before you know where to start.

Everyone gets 3 free scans per month, so it’s an easy first step for checking your current site.

Try Twist Scan here: https://www.twistwebstudio.com/scanner

Then take a look at your results. Your website should work for the people you’re trying to reach, not make them solve a mystery first.

“It’ll only take five minutes.”

The most optimistic sentence in web design.

You change one button… then notice the spacing is off. While you’re there, you fix the mobile layout. Then the form needs testing. Then one tiny link sends people somewhere it absolutely should not.

Suddenly, your “quick website update” has eaten the afternoon and is asking what’s for dinner.

It happens. Websites are surprisingly good at turning one small task into a full committee meeting with yourself.

The trick is to pause before clicking “while we’re here” and decide what actually needs to be done today, and what can wait for a proper update list.

What’s the most innocent “quick fix” that turned into a three-hour project for you?

Your website may not be slow because of “the code.”

It might be the giant hero image.

Images are often the heaviest files on a web page. When an oversized image is the first thing a phone has to load, visitors on slower or weaker connections may be waiting before they can even see your content.

Some won’t wait. The internet has trained us to expect everything immediately. Rude, but real.

Before uploading an image:
• Resize it to the dimensions you actually need
• Compress it
• Use a modern format, such as WebP or AVIF when supported

A sharp image doesn’t need to be enormous. Your homepage, and the people trying to use it, will thank you.

Take a look at your homepage on your phone today. Is the hero image helping, or holding the page hostage?

Save this for your next website update.

A red error message and a green success message may look obvious to you, but not to everyone.

Some visitors may not be able to distinguish those colors clearly. Others may be viewing your site in low contrast, grayscale, or bright sunlight. And if required fields are marked only in red, that important information can disappear entirely.

The fix is simple: don’t make color do all the work.

Pair color with text, an icon, or a clear label. For example:

✕ Error
✓ Success

That small change makes the meaning easier to understand for more people, and usually makes the interface clearer for everyone.

Take a look at your website today: is color supporting the message, or carrying it alone?

Before we hit publish, we don’t just cross our fingers and call it done.

We check the unglamorous stuff that helps a website work for more people:

• Does it make sense on a real phone, not just in a desktop preview?
• Can someone move through it using only a keyboard?
• Is the text easy to read against the background?
• Do videos have captions?
• Is the page carrying more weight than it needs to?

These checks may not make the portfolio screenshot, but they matter once real people start using the site.

That’s the Friday vibe: less “looks good in the mockup,” more “works well in the wild.”

What do you check before you hit publish?

Your homepage has one job, and it’s probably trying to do twelve.

Welcome visitors. Explain every service. Share your latest news. Introduce the team. Promote social media. Collect emails. Highlight five different offers… all before anyone knows what to click.

That’s how a homepage becomes busy instead of helpful.

The most effective homepages make one important next step obvious. Maybe that’s booking an appointment, requesting a quote, joining an event, or learning more about a service.

You can still include supporting information. Just don’t make visitors sort through a maze to find the thing you most want them to do.

Take a look at your homepage today: if someone landed there for the first time, would they know what to click next?

What’s the single most important action your homepage should guide visitors toward? Tell us in the comments.

Your website shouldn’t make visitors adapt before they can use it.

For Deaf Awareness Month, we’re highlighting a small feature on twistwebstudio.com that gives visitors more control over how they experience the site.

Look for the floating accessibility button in the bottom-left corner. Open it to adjust:

Text size from 90% to 150%
High contrast
Highlighted links
A more readable font
Reduced motion
A larger cursor

Your choices are saved in your browser, so they apply when you return.

There’s also a keyboard-friendly shortcut: press Tab to reach “Skip to main content” and move past repeated navigation.

Deaf people have diverse communication preferences and access needs, so no single setting works for everyone. This widget isn’t a replacement for accessible structure, clear content, captions, or ASL when appropriate. It’s one practical way to let visitors adjust the experience instead of leaving because the site doesn’t work for them.

Try it on twistwebstudio.com. Then tell us: which setting would you use first?
