In 2012, the thing that Ruby lacked was a good matrix library. We've got two of those now — MDArray (for JRuby) and NMatrix (for MRI/YARV).
Today, in 2015, the thing Ruby lacks is robust visualization. We have around five libraries, but none of them are finished. We want to make plotting in Ruby as easy as it is in Python.
If you're interested in mentoring, please let us know before this weekend. We've got a very good student application, and an extra slot to accept that student, but no mentor for the slot. It is our organization's policy that it's better to give this slot to a different project than to keep it do a substandard job.
Please, please, please think about volunteering.
