We love collecting stories from our partners and when we spoke to Debbie Bird — brand new to teaching ELPA21 — she gave Connect to Literacy a "chef's kiss."

Why?
Because even without ever having prepared students for the ELPA21 assessment before, she helped high schoolers who'd been stuck in EL services for years finally move forward.

Here's the skinny:
Some of Debbie's students had been English learners since kindergarten with nothing to show for it. As a first-year EL teacher at Harrison Central High School (MS), Debbie's biggest problem (other than understanding the assessment demands) was finding time to teach each student at the level they actually needed.

Connect to Literacy™ not only mirrored the format of the exam. It also took over the scoring and diagnostics, freeing her up to spend valuable time with students.
"It one hundred percent freed up my time... The feedback from Summit says, this is where you are. I don't have to use all my energy trying to figure out where they are.
So — chef's kiss."

The platform found the gaps and Debbie helped students close them by working with them one-on-one, walking through the rubric line by line, and showing them how to stretch their scores.

Her students felt it too. They walked in knowing exactly what to expect.

"The magic of Summit was knowing what the test was like so I could do well on it." — Student, Harrison Central High School

Time is the one thing teachers never have enough of. Debbie got hers back — and handed it straight to the students who'd been stuck for years and were finally prepared to move forward.

Connect to Literacy supports both students and their teachers.

As Curriculum Director Dr. Jennifer Johnson at Bay County District Schools points out, the endless pool of resources in Connect to Literacy is helping strengthen teaching teams as they support kids — not just to prepare for WIDA ACCESS™, but to reach grade-level proficiency.

"I'll not live long enough to see us use all of the golden goodness that is there," says Johnson.

Their results tell the same story.
📉 ELLs three or more grade levels behind dropped from 31% to 8%
📈 88% of ELLs moved up an entire level
✍️ 3rd grade ELL proficiency at Cedar Grove climbed from 8% to 38%

Why such great success? Students feel confident and prepared when they take the assessment.

"Summit K12 is the best thing that has ever happened to our students," says Kelly Cox, Interventionist at Highland Park Elementary.
"They have meaningful practice that they have never had before. They go in with competence. They know what to expect."

It's exciting to see the impact Connect to Literacy is having in classrooms around the country.
When San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS) adopted C2L for their transient English Learner (EL) population, they set a bold goal. They didn't just hit it — they beat it.

📈 +6 percentage points in EL proficiency (39.4% → 47.1%) 🎯 26% cumulative Long-Term English Learner (LTEL) reclassification, beat their 20% three-year goal
🌟 91 Mod-Severe EL students reclassified under tougher new criteria

C2L didn't just help teachers see what students needed to reach proficiency. It changed how students learned. "Being able to work at their own pace on what they need specifically — that's been the best feature," says Jennifer Johnston, Curriculum Specialist at SBCSS.
