PS3 NEC/TOKIN Removal Done Right | Frankenstein Process + Removal Blades - iKon Technical Solutions

Removing NEC/TOKIN from a PS3 motherboard does not need to involve excessive heat, aggressive prying, or unnecessary stress on the board.

In this video, we show the mechanical NEC/TOKIN removal process we use during our PS3 Frankenstein restorations at iKon Technical Solutions.

Our goal is simple: remove the original NEC/TOKIN cleanly and controllably while minimizing unnecessary heat exposure, motherboard flex, and mechanical stress around some of the most important areas of the PS3 motherboard.

This is the same type of process we use when building our Frankenstein consoles.

Why we use this method

The PS3 motherboard is old, densely populated, and already has years of thermal cycling behind it. Throwing more heat at the board than necessary isn't our preferred approach.

Using the proper thin removal blade allows us to work underneath the NEC/TOKIN in a much more controlled manner and separate it mechanically instead of blasting the entire area with heat.

Controlled pressure. Minimal heat. Precise removal.

And because so many other PS3 technicians have asked about the blades we use:

🔧 NEC/TOKIN Removal Blades Are Now Available

We are now selling the precision blades used for this removal method on eBay.

Why We DON’T Delid 40nm PS3 RSX Chips | Premium Factory Bare-Die Frankenstein Upgrade

Paste-ready YouTube description

Why don’t we mechanically delid the standard 40nm PS3 Slim RSX? And what makes our Premium Factory Bare-Die 40nm RSX different?

In this video we take a closer look at one of the biggest decisions we make when building a long-term PS3 Frankenstein conversion: preserving the integrity of the RSX package itself.

The conventional 40nm RSX used in later PS3 Slim systems was manufactured with an integrated heat spreader (IHS). Removing that IHS requires mechanically working on a complex flip-chip BGA package containing the silicon die, microscopic die-to-substrate interconnects, underfill, organic package substrate, VRAM packages and the external BGA interface.

Can a mechanically delidded 40nm RSX continue to work? Absolutely.

Does that mean the process places zero stress on the package? No.

Any procedure involving mechanical force, cutting, prying, localized heating or manipulation of a semiconductor package introduces an additional variable that did not exist when the chip left the factory. Package warpage, substrate stress, underfill integrity and solder-bump/interconnect stress are all real considerations in advanced semiconductor packaging.

That does not mean every mechanically delidded RSX will fail. It means that for a restoration where our primary objective is long-term reliability, we see no reason to introduce an avoidable mechanical risk when a better factory solution exists.

THE PREMIUM 40nm SOLUTION

Sony eventually produced a later 40nm RSX package for select early PS3 Super Slim motherboards that was factory manufactured as a bare-die package with no RSX IHS installed.

That is the package we target for our Premium 40nm Frankenstein conversion.

Instead of mechanically removing an IHS from a conventional Slim RSX, we begin with a factory bare-die 40nm RSX. This gives us direct access to the silicon die without mechanically opening or modifying the RSX package.

The chip is professionally prepared, reballed and transplanted onto the original FAT/Backwards-Compatible PS3 motherboard. We can then install a premium phase-change thermal interface directly at the RSX die and properly integrate the replacement into the original cooling assembly.

The result is direct die-level thermal interface service without subjecting the donor RSX to an unnecessary mechanical delid procedure.

No invasive IHS removal.
No VRAM removal.
No unnecessary mechanical manipulation of the RSX package.
Direct access to the factory bare silicon die.
Premium phase-change thermal interface material.
A cleaner and lower-risk installation path.

This isn't magic, and we will never claim that any semiconductor repair is guaranteed to last forever. A PS3 has multiple potential failure points and these consoles are approaching two decades of age.

Our goal is different:

Remove as many known and avoidable failure variables as possible and give the console the best practical opportunity for long-term service.

That means proper donor selection, BGA preparation and reballing, RSX power and voltage verification, NEC/TOKIN service where required, thermal management, SYSCON diagnostics and extensive testing before the system leaves our shop.

And yes — we work on failed Frankenstein conversions too.

If you purchased a Franky elsewhere and it has frozen, YLOD'd, developed RSX power faults, has questionable previous BGA work, or simply needs to be properly evaluated, we can diagnose the previous conversion and determine what can be recovered or rebuilt.

If you're going to invest in preserving a Backwards-Compatible PS3, get the unit done right.

The Complete PS3 Frankenstein 40nm Procedure – No Cuts, No Shortcuts | iKon Technical Solutions

Want to see what a real PS3 Frankenstein rebuild actually takes? This is it.

This is not a 20-minute highlight reel where the difficult work happens off-camera and everything magically works at the end. This video documents the iKon Premium PS3 Frankenstein process in real time, showing the actual board-level work, equipment, techniques, preparation, cleanup and time that goes into properly rebuilding one of these consoles.

The purpose of this video is simple: transparency.

If you're considering sending your PlayStation 3 to iKon Technical Solutions, you shouldn't have to wonder what happens to it once it reaches our bench. You can watch the process for yourself.

From complete teardown and inspection through motherboard preparation, BGA rework, RSX removal and replacement, site preparation, reballing, voltage configuration, NEC/TOKIN work, delidding, thermal work, cooling upgrades, cleaning, reassembly and everything in between — this video shows the work as it actually happens.

No pretending a complicated BGA repair takes 15 minutes.

No hiding the preparation.

No skipping past the difficult parts because they aren't exciting enough for YouTube.

No mystery about how your console is handled.

Just the work.

A proper PS3 Frankenstein conversion is considerably more involved than simply heating a chip, swapping an RSX and calling it repaired. Every step matters. Board condition matters. Preparation matters. Temperature control matters. BGA workmanship matters. Voltage configuration matters. Mechanical integrity matters. Thermal performance matters. Cleaning matters. And most importantly, the details matter.

This video exists so you can see those details.

At iKon Technical Solutions, these consoles are handled one at a time from start to finish. The person you're talking to about your Frankenstein service is the same person performing the actual board-level work on your console.

We work on these systems because we genuinely enjoy preserving them. The original backwards-compatible PlayStation 3 is an incredible piece of hardware, but nearly two decades later, many of them require significantly more than basic maintenance to remain reliable.

The Frankenstein conversion addresses one of the largest weaknesses of the early PS3 platform by replacing the original failure-prone RSX with a later-generation RSX while maintaining the functionality that makes these early systems desirable in the first place.

If you want the short version, there are plenty of short videos on YouTube.

If you want to see what actually goes into the job, grab a drink and settle in — because this is the real thing.

And if you're considering having your own console professionally rebuilt, you don't have to take our word for the quality of the work.

Watch it being done.

Then decide who you want working on your PS3.

In this video I show the full ultrasonic cleaning process we use on a PS3 motherboard after major hardware rework.

This board had already gone through serious work, including RSX service, NEC/TOKIN capacitor replacement, voltage configuration, and general board prep. After that much time and precision work, ultrasonic cleaning is not something we rush. The cleaning itself is important, but the drying process afterward is just as important, if not more important.

One thing I have noticed is that standing a PS3 board straight up lengthwise in an ultrasonic tank does not seem to clean as aggressively or evenly as placing the board face down toward the ultrasonic transducers. In my opinion, if you want the best cleaning action, the dirty/reworked side of the board needs to face the energy source. That said, you have to be very careful with board support. You do not want the board sitting directly on the bottom of the tank, vibrating against metal, flexing, or rubbing components loose.

For this reason, I use what I call the iKon Post Method. The board is supported safely so the ultrasonic energy can reach the board properly while keeping the motherboard suspended and protected. Proper support matters, especially on a large PS3 motherboard with BGA chips, tiny SMD components, connectors, and heavy copper areas.

My usual ultrasonic process:

* Sweeping frequency ultrasonic cleaning
* Around 60°C cleaning temperature
* Approximately 30 minutes cleaning time
* DI water rinse/flush
* 99% IPA flush to displace water
* Compressed air blowout from both sides of the board
* Let the board stand on edge so trapped liquid can drain out
* Second IPA flush
* Second compressed air blowout
* Mount the board on a rework jig
* Controlled drying/bake at around 80°C for 24 to 48 hours before power is applied

The drying step is not optional. Even when the board looks dry on the outside, moisture can remain trapped under BGA chips, ports, connectors, inductors, shields, and other tight areas. Powering a board too soon after ultrasonic cleaning can destroy the board or undo hours of rework.

This is why ultrasonic cleaning can add a few days to a repair. It is not just “throw it in the tank and power it up.” Done correctly, it is a controlled cleaning, rinsing, displacement, blowout, draining, and drying process.

This board will not be powered until I am confident it is fully dry.

At iKon Technical Solutions, we do the extra legwork because the quality of a PS3 Frankenstein repair starts long before the replacement RSX is installed.

Loose RSX chips can be found online, but many have unknown history. Some arrive with scratched or gouged IHS surfaces, questionable handling, unknown removal methods, and no real way to know what kind of heat or abuse they have already seen. They may work, but for customer repairs, “probably good” is not good enough.

For that reason, we prefer to harvest RSX chips from tested, working PS3 Slim donor boards whenever possible. Even if the donor console has another issue, such as a bad disc drive, video output problem, or other unrelated fault, the board can still give us a known starting point. We can verify the donor, remove the RSX ourselves under a controlled thermal profile, clean it properly, inspect it, check resistance/ohms, and prepare it for reballing before it ever goes near a customer motherboard.

This is more work than buying random chips and dropping them in, but it gives us control over the entire process.

Every RSX used for a customer repair is treated as a critical part, not just another chip. The goal is simple: reduce guessing, reduce risk, and give the repaired console the best chance at long-term reliability.

More work, less guessing.

This video shows part of that process: donor board harvesting, RSX removal, cleaning, inspection, resistance checks, and chip health verification before reball prep.
