Came across these photos while organizing, and I still get goosebumps - when my kids were little, I volunteered at their preschool, and while I wasn't a teacher, they let me share one of my passions: art. My goal was to show these little ones that drawing doesn't have to be scary. Everything starts with simple shapes. A square and a few rectangles became a robot. Circles and ovals became Elmo. (Yes, that's my son walking up to me...wish he still wanted to be by Momma's side at age 17).

And they got it! Watching preschoolers realize "I can draw that!" was one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. It almost made me wish I'd become an art teacher. Thank you, EPCC, for letting me share that joy, and for the thank-you poster I've kept all these years. 🧡

That's a wrap on our Halloween costume series! 🎃

Thank you so much for following along as I took a trip down memory lane. From Thing 1 and Thing 2 to the Wizard of Oz, a needle pulling thread, sugar skulls, emojis, rainbows, and a zero-cost Harry Potter and Dog Man, sharing these memories reminded me how lucky I've been to make them with my family. Some costumes matched, some didn't, and some were thrown together the night before, but every one of them was a good time.

I hope you found a little inspiration for your own crew this year. Whatever you dress up as, the best part is being together.

Proof that a great costume doesn't have to cost a thing!

For this Halloween jaunt - we raided their favorite books for inspriation AND our craft bins. For Bell's Harry Potter look, I glued together a striped felt tie and printed a Gryffindor emblem in color, then cut it out and glued it onto a black cardigan. For my Luc's Dog Man costume, I hot glued a yellow felt badge onto a blue T-shirt he already had and added a matching one to a blue hat.

Total cost: zero. Everything came from what we had at home, and the kids loved them just as much as any store-bought costume.

Mother-daughter vampires, pointy ears, fangs, and all! 🦇🖤

We went all in with dark lipstick, a spiderweb detail by my eye, and matching red and black witch-style hats to finish the look. Dressing up together is one of my favorite parts of Halloween. Love this kid.

Sometimes...you literally have 30 min to pull off a costume for a parade you forgot about. Thank goodness I keep my snazaroo face paints on hand at all times. Pajamas, robes, hair curlers and facepaint - that's all you need to have some Halloween fun! Doesn't Luc look beyond thrilled? 🤣🤣

Who says Christmas has to wait? These last-minute Christmas elf costumes came together in no time. Black outfits, Santa hats, cozy red scarves, and tinsel garland wrapped around them like candy canes, plus holiday mugs for props. Easy, comfy, and they stood out in a sea of ghosts and witches!

And yes, I've been known to get in on the elf fun myself. 😂

Bonus: these pieces go right back into the holiday bin and come out again for ugly sweater parties, holiday photos etc....too much fun.

Not every family costume has to match, and this year proved it! 😂

My son wanted to be a spooky mummy, my daughter was set on being a woodland fairy, and I went full Marilyn Monroe with the platinum curls and red lips. Three totally different costumes, zero coordination, and we had the best time.

It was also our 3rd Halloween party that year, so letting everyone choose their own look kept it fun for all of us. Sometimes the best family costume is just the one where everyone gets to be what they love. And God Bless our neighborhood for loving Halloween so much.

The things moms do for their kids! This was one of those rare Halloweens when everyone was on board with a family theme, no convincing required. My kids loved the idea of a Wizard of Oz costume as much as I did, and that made it extra special.

My daughter was Dorothy with her blue gingham dress and braids, my son was the Tin Man, and I fully committed to being the Wicked Witch of the West, green face and all (memories of green everywhere).

Those years when we all came together as a family are some of my favorite Halloween memories. 🧡

Throwback to our 1950s family costumes, and every piece was handmade or pulled from our closets.

I made my daughter's poodle skirt from blue felt and added a store-bought poodle decal. It came together faster than you'd think and there was no sewing involved - just fabric glue and velcro. My son rocked a plaid button-up and slicked-up hair, and I finished the look with a classic '50s hairstyle of victory rolls, lots of bobby pins and hairspray. So budget-friendly, and the kids looked so darn cute doing it.

Fun fact: I went to dinner that night with my '50s do stil intact and ran in to Warren Beatty! Talk about a night to remember.

This one still makes me laugh! 😂

Luc was set on being Chucky, so I grabbed a plain pair of denim overalls and hand-painted the Good Guys logo and all the colorful details myself. Add a striped shirt (pajamas at teh time), a bright red wig (who knew he'd look so good as a redhead), red high-tops, and a few painted-on scars, and the look was complete.

It was a little spooky, totally recognizable, and still kid-friendly for trick-or-treating. And honestly, hand-painting those overalls was half the fun.
