Your Opening Week energy WILL fade.

That isn't a problem. It's normal.

The mistake is relying on that initial excitement to carry families through the rest of the season.

Long-term engagement is built through consistent, smaller touchpoints.

Show parents the progress they can't see from the waiting room.

Give students milestones to look forward to before recital.

Keep the personal touches going after everyone has settled in.

Share the everyday moments that remind families what they're part of.

And make sure the only time they hear from your studio isn't when you need a payment, form or costume measurement.

None of this requires another huge event on your calendar.

It requires intentionally giving families reasons throughout the season to think:

“I'm so glad we chose this studio.”

Save this one and use it when you're mapping out your season.

Opening Week creates excitement. But what happens when the newness wears off?

That’s where your retention strategy really begins.

You don’t need to manufacture a huge “wow” moment every week. Instead, focus on three things throughout the season:

→ Progress: Are parents regularly seeing evidence that their child is growing?

→ Connection: Are students and families continuing to feel known and part of your studio?

→ Anticipation: Is there something between now and recital for them to look forward to?

When those three things are happening consistently, families have regular reminders of why they chose your studio in the first place.

So as you plan for Back to Dance, don’t stop your planning at Opening Week.

Ask yourself: What are we doing in weeks 2, 3 and 4 to keep building on the experience we created in week 1?

Opening Week gets the momentum started. What happens next helps you keep it.

"We want every student to feel like they belong here."

Most studio owners would agree.

But does your team know what that actually looks like day to day?

It's easy for the confident student to be noticed.

It's easy to celebrate the student who's progressing quickly.

It's easy to connect with the child who's already putting their hand up and joining in.

The real work is making sure EVERY student feels seen.

Before Back to Dance, have the conversation with your team.

Who might be easy to miss?

How can we create more opportunities for connection?

What are we noticing and celebrating beyond technique?

The little things might feel small to us.

To a child trying to figure out if they belong, they can mean everything.

19/08/2026

Every child should feel like they belong in your studio. 💙

But belonging isn't something we can just hope happens.

It's built in the way a student is welcomed. The teacher who remembers their name. The moment someone notices they're hanging back. The encouragement they get when they try something new. The friendships they're helped to make.

As you prepare for Back to Dance, talk to your team about what you want students to FEEL when they walk through your doors.

Because the classes matter.

The teaching matters.

But how a child feels when they're in your studio matters too.

You've planned your classes.

You've planned your timetable.

You've planned your enrolment campaign.

But have you planned what happens AFTER a new family enrols?

Before Back to Dance, take some time to map out the first 30 days of your new family experience.

Not just the emails they'll receive or the information they'll need.

Think about the EXPERIENCE.

How will they be welcomed?

When will someone personally check in?

How will you help their dancer feel comfortable?

How will you make it easier for them to become part of your studio community?

Those first few weeks might feel like a tiny part of their dance journey.

But they can have a HUGE impact on whether that journey continues.

Don't just plan how you'll enrol them. Plan how you'll keep them.

12/08/2026

Retention doesn't start when a family considers leaving.

It starts the moment they join your studio.

The first 30 days are where new families begin deciding how they feel about your studio. Do they know what to expect? Does their dancer feel comfortable? Do they feel noticed? Are they starting to feel like they belong?

And right now, BEFORE Back to Dance, you have an opportunity to plan that experience intentionally.

Think beyond getting them enrolled.

What happens after they say yes?

Map out the welcome. The communication. The check-ins. The little moments that make a brand-new family feel like they've found the right place.

Because enrolment gets them through the door.

Connection gives them a reason to stay. 💙

Think about the last time you visited somewhere completely new.

You were probably asking yourself questions before anyone even spoke to you.

Am I in the right place?

Where do I go?

What happens next?

Your newest dance families are asking those same questions.

The difference is, you have the opportunity to answer them before they even have to ask.

A warm welcome.

Clear directions.

A team member who introduces themselves.

A teacher who learns a student's name.

None of these things take long, but together they create an experience that makes families feel confident they've chosen the right studio.

Don't leave your first impression to chance.

Plan it with the same care you put into planning your classes.

💬 If you arrived at your own studio as a brand-new family today, what would you notice first?

05/08/2026

Studio owners spend hours planning what happens inside the classroom.

Lesson plans.

Music.

Class structure.

Activities.

But what about the first 10 minutes?

Who's welcoming new families at the door?

Who's helping a nervous student find their class?

Who's answering the parent who's visiting for the first time?

Who's making sure no one walks in feeling lost or unsure?

Those first few minutes shape how families feel long before the class even begins.

When the arrival feels calm, organized, and welcoming, parents relax.

Students feel more confident.

Teachers can focus on teaching instead of solving preventable problems.

The class is important.

But don't forget to plan everything that happens before it.

Sometimes the strongest first impression is created before the music even starts.

💬 If you walked into your studio as a brand-new family today, what would the first 10 minutes look like?

Preparation is one of the few things that benefits everyone.

When your team feels prepared, they feel more confident.

When your communication is clear, parents feel more supported.

When your systems are ready, you spend less time putting out fires and more time doing what you love.

The strongest seasons aren't built through last-minute effort.

They're built through intentional decisions made before the first class begins.

You don't need to overhaul your entire business before the season starts.

Instead, ask yourself:

What's one frustration from last season that I never want to experience again?

Start there.

Refine one system.

Answer one recurring question before it's asked.

Prepare your team.

Improve one part of your parent journey.

Small improvements made now have a ripple effect throughout the entire season.

Because the goal isn't just to have a busy season.

It's to have a season that feels organized, intentional, and enjoyable for your families, your team, and you.

💬 If you could eliminate one recurring challenge before this season begins, what would it be?
