macOS 27 doesn't run on Intel, which means a lot of teams are about to spend a quarter migrating Mac hardware they would rather not touch

In our 2026 DevOps AI survey, hardware procurement and lead times were the most-cited Mac infrastructure challenge, and 67% of teams said they lose at least an hour a week to Mac CI issues. That's the baseline before you add a forced migration on top of it.

This work isn't necessarily difficult. It's serial, manual, and impossible to do while builds are running, which is why it turns into a project instead of a task.

It's also the second time most teams have done it, and it will happen again with macOS 28. Persistent machines make every OS release a migration, because the machine and the OS are the same thing.

With ephemeral VMs they aren't. You build one image, every VM starts from it clean, and the next macOS release is a new base image rather than a quarter of hands-on work across the fleet.

Apparently one new Mac announcement wasn’t enough for today. 😄

Apple introduced new Mac mini models with M6 and M5 Pro this morning, then followed them up with a new Mac Studio featuring M5 Max and M5 Ultra.

Across the lineup, Apple is putting a big emphasis on AI performance, development workflows, more memory, faster connectivity, and even clustering multiple Macs together for larger workloads.

There’s plenty here for our team to dig into — especially when you start thinking about what these capabilities could mean for enterprise Mac infrastructure.

From a survey of 300 DevOps and platform leaders (July 2026):
→ 90% say code output has increased since adopting AI coding tools
→ 83% say infra costs have increased since adopting AI coding tools
→ Only 8% of teams can turn around a build in under 10 minutes

Most of us entered the age of AI with the assumption that more code would mean more release velocity. But if the infrastructure underneath hasn't scaled with it, that code increase shows up as infrastructure spend, not shipped product.

Teams that greenlit AI coding tools expecting a clean productivity win, it's worth a deep dive into the infrastructure line item to determine if that bet is paying off, or just moving the cost around.
