It has been the most absolute fun to bring some color and life to this beautiful corner and this brick building! We love it here!! Ohhh summer….we love you but a change in routine is always stressful to navigate at work. Specs is here for your kids (we may feed them chocolate) your dogs (we have dried salmon treats) and for you. This entrance into a new season (without daycare) felt complicated but Tessa has been lucky to go to the beach, the Ravine, and a pool this week with friends and her sunglasses are here for it. She’s not super excited about spending all day with me at work, but I’m so relieved it is an option as a mama. The Pottery Atascadero we love you too for all of your kids camps/classes!

She helped me water the plants today and restock our beverage fridge. We’ve got cold water, iced tea, root beer, sprite and …….maybe a few baby champagnes in there. ;)

Savannah - 10 years experience, at corporate optical, got all the certifications, digging deep. What she excels at: checking in orders to make sure they are 200% accurate, she notices all the little things. She will take the time with you to figure out what is absolutely the best option for you and also explain it in the best details if you have that brain that needs to understand it all. Frame enthusiast. Fellow tall girl. We are not related but I’d be honored to claim her as my sister. We are growing together in our work friendship. ♥️

Andrea - 21 years experience, we worked together for about 10 years in SLO. No I didn’t steal her, but I’m glad she was ready for something new. Andrea has an excellent eye for style and has risen to new things, optical experience but learning new software, systems, and tools. Strengths: making our displays look so good, and keeping us organized. Honestly the move was so much easier with her even tho I know her back and feet were hurting. So much moving. So many steps. Thank you my optical hopefully forever coworker.

Me: Kyla: 29 years experience. Totaled with us all: 60 years. As I’m training Nichole, you’ll love her, I’m realizing all over again how much I have to teach, how much we have learned and always continue to learn. This job is ever morphing, full of new things to learn with the eye, with lens technology and with frames, adjustments and style etc. This is why we love what we do and we show up every day to learn and grow, it will never stop, but our 60 years experience are here for YOU.

Happy Pride Month!

As many of you know, I was raised in a strict religion. As I began to step away from it and find my own way, my 16 year old had the courage (with fear and many tears, it broke my heart that she was so scared) to tell me she was gay. I’m thankful she trusted me, and I’m thankful that we were able to learn and grow together, both finding our footing away from what we were taught. I cannot even imagine not being able to support her.

Emily & Eden have been together for 4 years now, and their relationship is one I admire so much. They have supported each other through college choices, long distance, staying connected through FaceTime and staying up late with each other as they study and prep for finals into the early morning hours. Always kind to each other, I’ve never heard a harsh word. Emily has become part of our family and we love her so much.

Why is Pride month important? Because all humans deserve space and acceptance, that they are whole and good. Because the alternative is loss of life when they feel less than, mental health struggles and more. And believe me, relationships like Eden & Emily’s are worth celebrating!!!

Sundays are for sunnies! Our world is fresh & clean after the rain last week and we will enjoy this warm sunshine even more! My agenda is deck time with my book, prescription sunglasses are life changing once presbyopia hits. 🙌

Dr. Neil Louwrens in his new Albaoptics - the solo II in olive with a sunset orange mirror. Off to accompany him in all his active adventures. Dr. Louwrens is a concierge dr, which makes so much sense to me. Pay a flat fee and get personalized un-hurried care.

Rant: We pay $2400 a month for a very high deductible insurance plan. That we hardly use. 😭 My favorite nurse practitioner left the practice she was at, I tried to follow her but the new practice wasn’t taking new patients. I begged and said I’m not new to her! They said no. I called the original office to schedule with their new NP, almost in tears. Booked a few months out but I got on their schedule. Showed up last Monday and had been put in with the Dr, for a full exam, which I didn’t need, she had no idea why I was there, and the staff said she may not refill my medication which is the whole reason I was there. Again, almost in tears, and spent 90 min waiting for her on my day off. I’m just really grateful we are healthy and don’t have serious concerns as I would be really scared. Insurance is sabotaging our whole health care system. And people ask constantly why we don’t take insurance at specs. It’s because it comprises our ability to care for you.

Anyhoo, Dr Neil is a super nice guy and I know many of my clients really appreciate his care. You’ll get better care than using your insurance. Go check out his website if you want to know more, and his cool specs are from us.

Cheers to family time today, our family is complete with Eden home for the summer, just wish she would have been in this photo and at our grand opening party!!

As people admire the new space, they ask who designed it. It was me. Hi. 🫣😂 Laying awake at night, trying to build an imaginary new Specs in my head. And Jeff made it a reality. Where there was an ordinary office room, I dreamed of a workspace with an arched opening and a dispensing “bar” - Jeff made it real life. Where I dreamed of colorful light fixtures draped across the ceiling and gallery lighting highlighting the eyewear, Jeff put all the technical pieces together and made it shine. Tessa tolerated lots of weekends, evenings, and her parents forgetting her schedule from time to time. Being a trooper.

Jeff and I have navigated a lot the past 24 years of marriage, and I think one of the things we do best together is make spaces beautiful. And we both love it!
