The most common AI question we get right now is some version of "should we buy a tool or build something?"

Here is the sorting exercise we use, and you can run it yourself before you talk to anyone.

Take every AI idea on your list and ask one question about each: would a direct competitor get the same value out of this exact tool?

If yes, buy it. Meeting notes, ticket triage, document summaries, first draft content. Vendors have refined these across thousands of companies and you will not beat them on cost or speed.

If no, that is where a custom build starts to make sense. Usually it is because the answer lives in your own data. A chatbot reading public documentation gives you public answers. A chatbot reading your own repair history can tell a technician what tends to fail next on that unit.

We wrote up the full framework on the blog, including the five questions that settle the decision, where off-the-shelf hits a ceiling, and what custom costs you in year two.

Here's a helpful tip from our Head of Marketing, Christine Troianello Leskin, for companies feeling pressure to slash their budgets.

Most companies think marketing should be first on the chopping block when budgets tighten.

But that's usually the wrong instinct.

What should actually survive a budget cut:
- channels with proven ROI
- retention and lifecycle marketing (keeping customers costs far less than acquiring new ones)
- anything directly tied to pipeline
the systems and data that let you prove what's working

Cutting blindly doesn't save money, it just delays the damage and makes the next quarter harder.

The smartest companies don't ask "what can we cut in marketing?" They ask "what's actually earning its keep?" That's a very different conversation, and it's one we have with clients constantly.

Here’s a helpful tip from our Marketing Manager, Taylor Townsend, that companies working with marketing agencies won’t want to miss. Most companies accidentally hide the best marketing material from their agency.

They think they should only share:
• polished decks
• finalized copy
• approved brand assets
• professional photos

But that’s usually not what creates great marketing.

The gold is in:
• customer emails
• sales call notes
• Slack messages
• screenshots
• voice memos
• repeated questions
• internal conversations
• random observations from your team

The unfiltered moments are where agencies learn:
• how customers actually talk
• what people truly care about
• what objections come up repeatedly
• what emotions drive decisions

This helps create marketing that cannot be easily copied and marketing that works.

The more context we have, the better we can build messaging that actually connects. That’s why we always encourage clients to share the real, everyday details — not just the polished version.
