RIP Big Mike 🕊️

Sad news for the Prince George’s County basketball community as former Oxon Hill High School, Georgetown and NBA standout Mike Sweetney has died at 43. His wife, India, announced his death Thursday. No cause of death has been publicly disclosed.

Sweetney was a standout at Oxon Hill before becoming an All-American at Georgetown. The New York Knicks selected him No. 9 overall in the 2003 NBA Draft, and he went on to play four NBA seasons with the Knicks and Chicago Bulls.

He later became an advocate for mental health awareness and spoke openly about his experiences with grief and depression, using his platform to support others.

Sweetney leaves behind a lasting legacy in Prince George’s County basketball and beyond.
