Sometimes, it is not only about what we build, but who has the opportunity to help build it.
Through the Te KAI program, an Australian Government initiative supporting Kiribatiโs infrastructure priorities, two skilled carpenters with hearing disabilities recently helped renovate the beneficiary service area at the Kiribati Ministry of Women, Youth, Sports and Social Affairs.
The improvements have created a safer, more comfortable and dignified space for people accessing important social support services.
The project also created an opportunity for skills to be shared. Working side by side, an experienced carpenter mentored a younger tradesperson, passing on practical skills while contributing to infrastructure that will support older people, people with disabilities and others in the community.
For Bauro Lambourne, who oversees construction projects through Te KAI, the experience reinforced an important lesson:

It is a great example of how infrastructure can do more than improve facilities. By creating opportunities for people to participate, contribute and develop their skills, infrastructure investment can help build stronger and more inclusive communities.
