In many African American Hoodoo traditions, the Psalms are prayed as sacred scripture for protection, comfort, spiritual cleansing, and guidance. Practices vary by family and lineage, but prayer remains a meaningful connection between faith and everyday life. 🤎

Spiritually, praying the Psalms invites us to bring our whole selves before God. Through a metaphysical lens, we can also reflect on how sacred words focus our attention, shape our intentions, and encourage us to act in alignment with our prayers.

What’s the purpose of “dressing” candles?

Dressing a candle is a sacred act of preparing it for a specific spiritual purpose—often by anointing it with oil while speaking prayers, setting intentions, or presenting a petition.

Within African American Hoodoo and rootwork, this practice brings prayer into physical expression. A candle may be prepared with a particular purpose in mind, accompanied by Psalms, heartfelt words, and customs passed through families or learned within spiritual communities. Practices vary across families and lineages.

✨ From a spiritual perspective, dressing a candle creates a moment to be deliberate about what we are praying for and inviting into our lives.

✨ From a metaphysical perspective, the flame can symbolize illumination, transformation, and focused intention. Preparing the candle becomes an opportunity to bring our thoughts, words, and actions into alignment.

🕯️ Reasons practitioners may use a dressed candle include:

🌿 Praying for protection and peace
🌿 Seeking spiritual cleansing and renewal

🕯️🌿 HONORING OUR ROOTS: WHAT IS ANCESTRAL VENERATION?

In celebration of Hoodoo Heritage Month, The Spirit & Truth Institute of Theology & Spiritual Studies and Hands to the Root Sacred Healing invite you to reflect on the lives and legacies of those who came before us.

Ancestral veneration means honoring our ancestors through remembrance, gratitude, and care for the wisdom and stories they left behind.

🤎 HONOR IS NOT WORSHIP.
In our spiritual practice, we do not worship our ancestors. We honor them. Worship belongs to God. Remembering our loved ones, tending their graves, preserving their photographs, and expressing gratitude for their lives are acts of love—not demonic acts.

📖 BIBLICAL CONNECTIONS
Exodus 20:12 teaches us to honor our father and mother. Psalm 78:4 calls us to share the stories of God’s works with the next generation. Hebrews 12:1 speaks of a “great cloud of witnesses,” following its account of those who lived by faith.

These passages offer meaningful connections to honor, remembrance, and spiritual legacy, while Christians differ in their understanding of ancestral practices.

🌳 CULTURALLY
Within many African American families and Hoodoo traditions, remembrance lives through family stories, recipes, songs, keepsakes, and graveside care. These practices help preserve histories of resilience, faith, creativity, and love.

✨ SPIRITUALLY & METAPHYSICALLY
Many practitioners understand ancestral remembrance as an affirmation that love and spiritual connection continue beyond physical death. Reflecting on our lineage can deepen our sense of belonging and inspire us to carry forward what was life-giving.

Honoring your roots does not require excusing harm. You can cherish wisdom, acknowledge painful history, and choose a healthier legacy for the next generation.

• Create a remembrance space with photographs and flowers.
• Offer prayers of gratitude to God for their lives.

Psalm 91: Dwelling in Divine Refuge

What does it mean to dwell in the secret place of the Most High?

Spiritually, Psalm 91 invites us into a deeper relationship with God—a place of trust, communion, and refuge. To dwell is to remain: to nurture that connection through daily prayer, stillness, and the choices we make.

Even when life feels uncertain, we can return to the sacred assurance that we do not face our struggles alone. God’s presence offers comfort, courage, and strength within the storm. 💛

Through a metaphysical lens, we can also reflect on the “secret place” as an inner sanctuary—the quiet space where our awareness turns toward the Divine. This symbolic reading invites us to examine what occupies our minds, what we hold in our hearts, and where we place our trust.

The shelter of God’s wings can symbolize being held in divine love. The shield can represent faith and discernment that help us respond to fear without allowing it to govern our lives.

This reflection is an invitation to practice awareness with compassion. Experiencing hardship does not mean your faith is weak or that your thoughts caused your suffering. You can feel afraid and still be spiritually rooted. 🌿
