Microsoft will never call you. Never talk to anyone on the phone that calls you, hang up and call their company back on their main number. Over the past few years we have seen ransomware attacks increase as more devices and services become available to people around the world that then get exploited to allow people to gain access and encrypt data. The biggest question we get is how can we protect ourselves. The sad fact is no matter how much money you spend, what products you use your not really ever fully protected. Grim facts. IT can argue different points but the facts are there will always be mistakes by people and IT that allow it to be a problem. What we recommend is offsite backups, buy multiple usb drives and rotate them as often as able. So the backup is made and it is unhooked from the PC/Network, the 2nd drive is hooked up for the next backup. WHAT ABOUT THE CLOUD JOSH! yeah, the cloud is great and we use it for backups for sure. Use Sharepoint and one-drive to push your important data to Sharepoint. If a malicious actor deletes your Sharepoint site it can be restored for 90 days, If they delete all the data from Sharepoint it can be rolled back for 30 days. WHAT IF THEY HACK MICROSOFT! Yup. That would be unfortunate but your doing the first mentioned backup with multiple drives so it means little. Can I trust Microsoft to not sell my data? Maybe? We never really know what happens. I love using their products and push them daily. IT makes the best choice with the information available for their clients/employer. There is no full proof method. Over the independence day weekend, the terrorist group DarkSyde ransomed over a million devices, through exploiting a MSP service. Months before that during the election they or another group ransomed solarwinds orion platform another MSP software for managing clients. The nature of IT has changed and is stressful and constantly changing. ALWAYS use Two Factor Authentication. Its irritating but do your IT dept a favor and stop complaining about it. We do not like it either and yes its still not full proof. Stop using simple passwords, ZERO words, 12+ characters , special characters and numbers. Stop adding a 1 or ! to the end. My last thought is the IT folks in banking, hospitals and other high risk environments, Keep your chin up, head on a swivel and we appreciate you.
