Reindeer have taken early flight in the Texas Panhandle! …Along with Santas, wise men, and Christmas decorations of all varieties. It’s a Red Flag and Red-Nosed Warning kind of day out here on the Llano Estacado. Wind gusts up to 65 mph have us trading topsoil and tinsel with neighboring States. I saw Frosty rolling dazed and confused down the street. The Grinch was not far behind him except he was 30 feet in the air and swearing like a sailor. His large bag full of stolen Christmas goods couldn’t even keep him from catching wind and flying haplessly toward Oklahoma.

Friends, I entered the Oliver Saddle Shop 2021 Calendar Photo Contest, and I am excited that five of my photos have made it to the voting round.

My photo entries this year all feature a classic rancher and dear friend, Ellery Aufdengarten. Ellery was the owner of Fletcher Ranch out in Marfa. He passed on to his Heavenly home this past July out on his ranch and in the saddle. Ellery’s son, Gerry, was my initial ticket to the ranch some years ago to photograph and participate in fall and spring cattle works. Ellery took a chance on me, a total stranger; as he was known for doing with many others. He took me in, and we became fast friends. The cowboy way of life was never in danger of dying-out on Ellery’s watch. He was a great man, and he is sorely missed. In the photos, look for Ellery, crowned with his dusty black cowboy hat. Here’s to Ellery, a man with a heart as big as West Texas, and all of the fantastic men and women associated with The Fletcher.

My goal of the Calendar Photo Contest is to have at least one of my photos end up as one of the top three most liked photos in the Oliver Saddle Shop Facebook Photo Contest album. I sure would appreciate your votes. To make your “Like” votes official, you have to click within this post’s photo (which will then take you to Oliver Saddle’s original contest album post), find my five photos within their album, and then click the “Like” button on my photos there (in their official Facebook album). My first photo is about seven photos into their album. It is a dusty cattle scene from far West Texas with Ellery standing in the middle of it all. Once you find that photo if you click to the right, the next four photos after this one are also photos taken and submitted by me. Each of those posted photos are labeled with my name; however, they got the spelling a little off, so they are labeled “Loccket.”

Hey, thanks so much for your strong support! God bless the Aufdengarten family, the American cowboy, and you! – LLL

I participated in a mixed media art workshop at the Amarillo Art Institute, back in July. Artist Cale Rogers led the charge. My resulting piece is this one titled “Texas Roan.” These photos show the front and the back of the piece. Cale is known for having fun with the back of his paintings, and he encouraged us to do the same. I enjoyed the random freedom of it all.
Here’s to Texas folk art, creativity, you and me, and me and you!

More layers of Texas are being scraped-off in north Amarillo these days. I went on a walk tonight in what will soon be the living rooms, driveways, sidewalks, man caves, and she sheds of new neighbors. I thought about how I’m glad I have my piece of Texas, but how I wish this piece of Texas didn’t have to go. - Intellectually dishonest, I know. I thought about how brutal to our home landscapes it is that they mine the fertile topsoil, leave us the bedrock, and then how we often turn around and buy back quality Texas topsoil at a premium price. I helped a turtle find his way out of the danger zone into a safe part of the pasture, and that made me feel a little better. I watched that gorgeous Panhandle sun slip away to mark another day, and I found myself out there alone singing lyrics from Cory Morrow’s song, Texas Time Travelin’:
🎶“... You've got to take a look around
And see this land before it drowns
Underneath the city streets
Geronimo, he said it best
This is my land, I will not rest
Until I'm dead or it's been freed
I wanna go time travelin' through
Texas you and me
I wanna go time travelin' through
Texas you and me
I wanna be there, breathe the air and see all I can see
In my Texas time travelin' machine” 🎶..Now I’m back at my little piece of Texas, in my bed, on top of my bedrock; wishing you a good night from Sweet Amarillo, my friends.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
- Lamentations 3:22-23
It’s a wonderfully wet wintry Wednesday in Sweet Amarillo.
A spent rose bloom captures moisture needed for new growth in the coming weeks. I am learning that in dormant roses and in my life, there is oftentimes a lot happening in what otherwise appears dead.
“The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.”
- Psalm 138:8
Let’s go make it a great day, my friends; knowing that the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2) is at work in every aspect our lives whether we realize it or not. True story.

hardscrabble: adjective; involving hard work and struggle.
Palo Duro Canyon through the centuries has been home to Native Americans, ranchers, and wildlife of all kinds.
I was out there today hiking around. It was a beautiful Texas High Plains 70-degree fall day. Steep grades, small loose rocks underfoot, sharp jagged rocks all around, plants with thorns at most every step, the possibility of encountering rattlesnakes, and any number of ways to seriously injure yourself or die if you make a wrong move made the going slow and arduous. I paid attention with every step.
The thing that got me was that all I was doing was hiking, and it was exhausting. I wasn’t trying to do the hard work of life out there. I wasn’t ranching, hunting wildlife, caring for kids, fetching water, cooking, or defending my home. All of that to say that on my hike the word “hardscrabble” came to mind as I was thinking about people actually living life out there without modern conveniences and machinery. Those folks were tough.
I love hiking Palo Duro Canyon. I also love living in these modern times and coming home to running water and a soft bed!
