Family Technology. PC getting slow? Let me give you the easiest and simplest technique that may provide dramatic results.

Here it is: RESTART your PC at least once at day. You can also turn it OFF, then turn it back ON. That's it.

Here's why. Every time you run a program (e.g., your browser, WORD, Adobe Reader), it uses a component of memory called RAM. As you open more programs, more RAM is used, leaving less and less for the next application. Even when you close a program, some don't remove themselves from RAM. And so, the more programs you open, even though you may no longer be using them, they will impact all programs - making everything you do slower and slower.

For those of you that don't restart your PC for weeks or months, the results can be amazing.

If you use programs that use a lot of memory (editing, art, architecture), you might also consider restarting your PC several times a day.

The good news is that when you restart your PC, RAM is cleared out and ready to begin again.

Give it a try. Contact me at [email protected] / 201-315-4943 if you have questions or need IT support for your home and office.

FAMILY TECHNOLOGY. Can't stand the endless Windows 10 notifications? You know, the ones that appear at the bottom right of your screen. Let's turn them OFF.

Here's how:
1. On your Windows 10 desktop or laptop, place your mouse tip in the center of you background (not on top of any icons) and RIGHT CLICK once.
2. A floating menu will appear.
3. Move the mouse over DISPLAY SETTINGS and LEFT CLICK once. The DISPLAY screen will appear.
4. On the left side, left click once on NOTIFICATIONS & ACTONS. The NOTIFICATIONS & ACTIONS page will appear.
5. Scroll through the right side of this page and click on the switch at the right of each item to turn one or more notifications OFF.
6. When you are done, close this page.
7. If the notifications don't stop immediately, restart your PC.
8. If you later decide to turn any notification ON, simply revisit this page.

That's it.

How do I get my photos from my iPhone to my PC? Our iPhones take great photos. The photos are so great that we take hundreds or even thousands of them. Organizing, editing and sharing them from the small iPhone screen can be a hassle. You'd really like to move them to your PC where you can take advantage of your mouse, keyboard, large monitor and simple Windows Photos software. You're not a computer geek, so you need a really simple solution - something that 'just works'.

The answer, my favorite method, is Dropbox. With a Dropbox subscription, not only can you store and share 2 Tera-Bytes of any kind of data (that's a million giga-bytes), but it comes with a feature called CAMERA UPLOAD that easily copies your photos from your iPhone to your Windows or Apple PC. Cost is about $100.00 annually, but, once you see how easy it is, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Need help? I am the owner/manager of Family Technology Associates, headquartered at 70 W Allendale, Allendale. Is it time for a new Windows 10 PC? I have been the owner/manager of Family Technology Associates for the last 20 years. Let me help you decide what equipment to purchase - then move you and your data to a new Windows 10 PC. Not sure how to proceed? Contact me, Fred Litt, at [email protected] if you have questions.

Note: Microsoft no longer supports Windows 7. Internet Explorer, a critical component of Windows 7 and 8, does not provide the required security for your financial transactions. Windows 10 has addressed these issues with their new Windows 10 browser, called Edge. If you have been avoiding Windows 10 and need to move your data, email, and PC skills to a new Windows PC, I can help.

My office is at 70 W Allendale Ave. Tel: 201-315-4943. Serving Allendale and surrounding communities for 20 years.

Family Technology Advisory. The latest scam. You may have heard about recent terror threats delivered by email.

Just received the following. I have no doubt it is a scam. However, if you receive an email like this and are concerned, contact your local police department. Do not send money.

Seniors are particularly susceptible to phone and email scams. Please listen carefully to related conversations by elderly family members. Scams never end. The best protection is ongoing discussion with family, friends, and colleagues.
