If you noticed your lights fading for a second on Monday morning, the culprit was a squirrel that got into an AMU switch near Kossuth Regional Health Center. Nationally, squirrels rank among the top disruptions to the electric grid alongside severe weather. There were no power outages from the incident, due in part to the redundancy built into AMU's equipment. Watch the upper left corner of the attached video for a flash the moment the squirrel made contact with the open switch.

AMU Throwback Thursday
It's hard to believe that the vote to establish a communications utility with Algona Municipal Utilities was nearly 30 years ago. On November 4, 1997, Algonans approved establishing a broadband communications utility with overwhelming support (74%). AMU took advantage of several venues to promote its new communications services, including the "Algona Home & Rec Show" on May 31, 2005. The attached flyer features a special AMU offered to new cable tv customers at that time.

In the 1970s, AMU showcased energy efficient homes and apartments, known as Gold Medallion homes. Equipped with the latest in efficient appliances and heating systems, these homes were the "Cadillacs" of energy efficiency. AMU joined local realtors in sponsoring open houses to show them to the public.
