Breaking news: Schools in Algona lock down after threat

Schools in Algona locked down Wednesday due to a threat.Algona police said in a statement the threat was made by phone. Officers responded to the city’s schools as a precautionary measure. An investigation is underway.“On Wednesday, May 13, a phone call was received regarding an outside threat to Bishop Garrigan schools,” the statement said. “All Algona schools are currently locked down and will continue to shelter in place.”Over the noon hour, multiple Algona Police Department and Kossuth County Sheriff’s Department vehicles were parked outside Bishop Garrigan and Algona High schools. According to Algona police, law enforcement officers are on site at all schools in the city and students are safe.“The incident is still under investigation by law enforcement,” the Algona Police Department statement said. “At this point, there’s no reason to believe that the broader community is at risk.”At about 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Algona Community Schools posted on Facebook that students in all five of its buildings had been ordered to shelter in place. The statement urged people not to go to the school buildings until the shelter-in-place order was lifted.Bishop Garrigan Schools had not made a public statement to social media or on its website as of 1:30 p.m., Wednesday.In addition to the shelter-in-place orders at schools in Algona, the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office said there was increased officer presence at North Union and West Bend Mallard schools.
