Your CNC machines are running perfectly. Orders are going out on time. Your shop is ready to bid on its next DoD contract. 🏭

But have you checked what's happening behind the machines?

CAD drawings. G-code. Legacy CNC systems.

These often-overlooked parts of manufacturing deserve attention when evaluating your shop's CMMC scope and cybersecurity risks.

⚠️ The question isn't just whether your machines work. It's whether your shop-floor technology and data are properly accounted for in your compliance strategy.

Machine shop owners: When was the last time you reviewed your CNC environment for CMMC readiness?

10/15/2026

🚨 CNC machines outside CMMC scope? That's a risky assumption.

Many machine shops focus on office computers and forget to examine what's happening on the shop floor.

Legacy CNC machines, CAD drawings, and G-code workflows can raise important cybersecurity and compliance questions—especially when your business supports Department of Defense (DoD) contracts.

Here's what to check:
✅ CMMC scope for shop-floor systems
✅ Protection of CAD files and controlled technical data
✅ Network isolation for legacy CNC machines
✅ Access controls for sensitive manufacturing files

Don't wait until an assessment or contract review exposes a gap.

Machine shop owners and defense contractors: Have you reviewed your CNC environment for CMMC scope?

Your security training is teaching them to look in the wrong place.

We all train our teams: Don't click suspicious links in emails.

But what if the threat isn't in an email at all?

Attackers are now using fake error screens that look exactly like Chrome, Word, or Windows. It says "Something went wrong" and gives you a simple fix to copy and paste.

That "fix" is malware. And your employee just installed it themselves.

This is ClickFix - and it's bypassing traditional security awareness training because it doesn't feel like a threat. It feels like solving a problem.

Stop only training for inbox threats. Start training for browser threats.

Have your teams seen this? Let's talk about how you're adapting your training below. 👇

You can out-machine every shop in the country and still lose the contract. Not on tolerance. On paperwork.

It's the hardest thing for a proud shop owner to hear: being the best machinist in the room doesn't make you eligible for defense work. CMMC Level 2 grades whether you can prove your security on paper, control by control. Miss one of the 110, and your talent doesn't count. That's the difference between bidding and begging for work.

The good news: this is fixable, it's cheaper the earlier you start, and we walk you through it in plain English. The first review is free.

A machine shop owner kept the cleanest floor in town. His compliance file? A mess he kept meaning to get to.

One of those pays this month's bills. The other decides whether he's still bidding on defense contracts next year. And when CMMC Level 2 came up, only the paperwork mattered.

Here's the part owners don't realize: compliance isn't extra work on top of the real work. For defense contracts, it IS the real work. It's how the DoD decides you can be trusted with their data. The good news is it's fixable, it's cheaper the earlier you start, and we walk you through it in plain English. The first review is free.

You may not agree with this. Cybersecurity Awareness Month is 100% completion and 0% behavior change.

The numbers tell the whole story. 73% of your team watched the training on 2x speed with the audio muted. 11% still have the sticky-note password taped under the keyboard they just finished watching the sticky-note video about. The next phishing email catches them anyway.

The reason isn't your team. The reason is that annual completion tracking was designed for your auditor, not your attacker. Audit evidence looks great in a binder and does nothing in a Monday morning inbox. Which is exactly why the companies hitting 100% completion are the same companies showing up on breach notification lists.

Here's what actually changes behavior. Short-cycle reinforcement, not annual dumps. Live-fire phishing simulations with real consequences, not static click-the-right-answer modules. Click rates and credential-entry rates measured and reported, not completion percentages. Team-level accountability, not individual box-checking.

If your training program is still built around "did they finish it," you're paying for compliance theater. Not security.

Honest question for the group. Which of those three stats describes your team the closest right now? The 2x-speed watchers, the sticky-note crowd, or the "we still get caught anyway" group? Drop it in the comments and I'll tell you the one adjustment that moves that stat fastest.

Nobody mentions this. Your MSP is probably running AI tools on your network right now, and every one of them might be processing your CUI without your consent.

Automated ticket summarization. AI-assisted monitoring. AI chatbots embedded in their helpdesk. Model-based alerting on your endpoints. Every one of those tools has to read something to work. When your defense contractor environment is the input, that something regularly includes Controlled Unclassified Information you are legally required to protect.

Here's the part most CEOs have not thought through. Your MSP's AI governance is now your AI governance. Their vendor contracts, their data residency decisions, their model training exclusions, their FedRAMP posture, their NIST AI RMF alignment. If any of that is missing or thin, it rolls directly into your SPRS score, your annual executive affirmation, and your False Claims Act exposure under the DOJ Civil Cyber-Fraud Initiative.

You did not pick those AI tools. You did not vet their vendors. You did not sign off on where that data lives. But if a prime asks, or a whistleblower reports, you are the one who signed the attestation.

Comment AI and I'll tell you how to use it properly.

If you run a small business and you don't have an IT person on staff, this one is for you.

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and the honest truth is most small business owners don't need another scare post. You need a straight checklist you can actually run through with your team.

So we put one together. 12 points. Three categories. Zero jargon.

Identity and access. Phishing-resistant MFA on every account. Legacy authentication turned off. Patches installed within 14 days. These three alone stop the overwhelming majority of credential-based attacks.

Human and ex*****on. Restrict PowerShell for non-admin users (this one breaks a very current attack called ClickFix that targets small businesses specifically). Keep immutable offline backups that ransomware can't reach. Run continuous EDR monitoring so threats get caught early, not after.

Response preparedness. A written incident response plan you've actually tested. Backup restoration goals you can hit. An annual tabletop so your team isn't learning on game day.

The full 12 points are in the carousel. Swipe through, screenshot what you need, and if a few of these feel like homework you don't have the hours for, that's exactly what NerdsToGo exists to handle for you.

DM us READINESS and we'll send you our free 3-minute interactive self-assessment tool. You'll know in minutes which of the 12 points you've got covered and which ones need attention before year-end.

You are letting your team do the wrong thing with AI.

Here is what is happening in your shop this week and you probably do not know.

Every CUI drawing pasted into ChatGPT is a data spillage under DFARS 252.204-7012.
Every spillage triggers a 72-hour DoD reporting clock.
Every missed clock is a False Claims Act exposure on the executive signature.

The scary part is not that your team is malicious. They are efficient. They want to summarize a spec sheet in 10 seconds instead of 10 minutes. So they paste it into ChatGPT. The moment that drawing hits an AI tool outside a FedRAMP-authorized boundary, it is a spillage. The 72-hour clock starts whether you know it happened or not.

Fix is not banning AI. Banning AI just pushes it underground. The fix is knowing which tools are safe for CUI, giving your team the right ones, and writing a 1-page policy they will actually follow.

Comment "AI" and I'll tell you how to use it properly without the spillage.

Last Tuesday, September 22, I sat in CyberBrews' CMMC in Practice forum. I went on purpose. I stayed for every session on purpose. Because the business owners I work with every week deserve advice that came from the room, not just the framework.

One line from the forum stayed with me the whole trip home..

CMMC readiness takes more than understanding the requirements. It takes the right people, processes, technology, and support to build and maintain a secure environment.

That one sentence is why most defense orgs still fail on assessment day even after months of reading the rules. They have the rules. What they do not have is:

The right PEOPLE. Someone who owns each of the 110 controls. Not "IT." A named person accountable for it.

The right PROCESSES. A written, tested workflow for how CUI is created, stored, transmitted, and destroyed. Not a policy on a shelf. A process the team actually follows.

The right TECHNOLOGY. FIPS-validated encryption. MFA everywhere. Boundary protection with monitoring. Tools chosen because they meet 800-171, not because they were the cheapest.

The right SUPPORT. A partner who does not disappear after the SSP is written. Managed IT, cybersecurity, cloud, backup and recovery, ongoing technology support. The daily work that keeps the file matching reality.

That is exactly the gap NerdsToGo was built to close. We handle the everyday technology work so the compliance posture you signed off on stays true 12 months from now.

Which of the four pillars is your biggest gap right now? People, process, technology, or support? Drop it in the comments and I will share what I heard in the room about closing that specific one.
