Today we remember Chuck Berry on what would have been his 100th birthday.

Born October 18, 1926, in St. Louis, Missouri, he took rhythm and blues and gave it a new voice, a new swagger, and a guitar line the whole world learned by heart. "Maybellene," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Rock and Roll Music," and "Johnny B. Goode" became the blueprint for everything that followed, and in 1986 he was among the very first artists welcomed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

A century after his birth, every young player who picks up a guitar is still, in some way, playing his song. We honor the Father of Rock and Roll, and the joy he set loose in all of us.

Today we remember Art Tatum on what would have been his 117th birthday.

Born October 13, 1909, in Toledo, Ohio, he lost most of his sight as a child and learned the piano by ear. What came out of his hands was so fast, so rich, and so full of invention that the greatest musicians of his day came just to watch him play. Generations of jazz pianists still measure themselves against him.

We honor an Ohio son whose music proved there was no limit to what two hands could say.

Today we remember Dick Gregory on what would have been his 94th birthday.

Born October 12, 1932, in St. Louis, he walked into white comedy clubs with a microphone and told the truth about racism until the room had to laugh and listen. He marched, he fasted, he ran for office, and he never stopped insisting that America could be better than it was.

We honor the comic who made courage look like a punch line, and the activist who never put the mic down.

Today we remember Thelonious Monk on what would have been his 109th birthday.

Born October 10, 1917, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and raised in New York, he played the piano like no one before him. His songs, like "'Round Midnight," "Straight, No Chaser," and "Blue Monk," helped give birth to modern jazz and are still played in clubs and classrooms around the world.

Happy birthday, Monk. The music keeps swinging.

Today we remember Mike Ditka, who passed away on October 9, 2026, at the age of 86.

Born October 18, 1939, in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, "Iron Mike" carried the grit of a steel town into everything he did. He changed the tight end position forever with the Chicago Bears and became the first tight end ever enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

As head coach, he led the 1985 Bears to a victory in Super Bowl XX and gave Chicago memories that will be passed down for generations. Tough, passionate, and larger than life, he was a champion as a player and as a coach, and he never stopped loving the game or the city that loved him back.

Today we remember John Lennon on what would have been his 86th birthday.

Born October 9, 1940, in Liverpool, he gave the world songs that still ask us to imagine something better. Through The Beatles and beyond, his music carried love, peace, and honesty into millions of homes, and it still does.

Rest in peace, Freddie Jackson.

The voice behind "You Are My Lady" and "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)" has gone home. He passed on October 5, just three days after his 70th birthday.

Born in Harlem, he came up singing in church and gave the 1980s some of its most tender love songs. "Tasty Love," "Have You Ever Loved Somebody," and "Jam Tonight" carried us through slow dances, weddings, anniversaries, and late nights with the radio turned low. His music was the soundtrack to a lot of our love stories.

We hold his family, friends, and fans in our hearts today. His voice will live on.

Today we remember Rev. Jesse Jackson on what would have been his 85th birthday.

Born in Greenville, South Carolina, he marched beside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., then built Operation PUSH and the Rainbow Coalition to keep that work going. His runs for president in 1984 and 1988 opened doors for a generation of Black candidates, and his voice carried hope from church pulpits and union halls all the way to the talks that brought captive Americans home from overseas. He taught crowds of children to stand up straight and say it out loud: "I am somebody."

We honor his faith, his fire, and the hope he asked us to keep alive.

Today we remember Fannie Lou Hamer on what would have been her 109th birthday.

A sharecropper's daughter from the Mississippi Delta, she was beaten and threatened for trying to register to vote, and she kept going anyway. In 1964 she testified at the Democratic National Convention and told the whole country what it cost a Black woman to claim her rights. She gave us words we still carry: "I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired."

We honor her courage, her faith, and the voice she would not let anyone take.

From the South Side of Chicago to The Original Kings of Comedy, The Bernie Mac Show, and Ocean's Eleven, Bernie told the truth and made us laugh at ourselves while he did it. He talked to America like family, because to him we were.

We honor the man, the laughter, and the love he left behind.
