The real story: NOAA Fisheries reported that the 2025-2026 North Atlantic right whale calving season produced 23 calves — the highest number since 2009 — with approximately 500 sightings of 129 individual right whales documented in the Southeastern calving grounds. Some years, North Atlantic right whale news is almost impossible to read. This year, for once, it isn’t.

NOAA Fisheries confirmed that the 2025-2026 calving season produced 23 right whale calves — the highest number recorded since 2009. Throughout the season, researchers logged roughly 500 individual sightings of 129 different right whales in the shallow coastal calving grounds of the Southeastern United States.

For a species with fewer than 400 individuals left on Earth, and only around 70 reproductively active females among them, that number is enormous. Seeing this much of the population show up in the calving grounds at once suggests something researchers have been hoping for: real signs that reproductive health may be improving.

It doesn’t erase the very real threats this species still faces — vessel strikes and fishing gear entanglement remain constant, deadly risks. But for one calving season, the math finally tilted the right way.
