Lune Wolf Engineering

Lune Wolf Engineering independent electronics engineering firm specializing in low-voltage and logic-level applications

LWE, founded by Wil 'Loopy' Garou in 2011, specializes in low-voltage lighting effects for fashion accessories and costumes. At this point, all of LWE's costume lighting jobs are custom made. LWE also has experience in low-voltage lighting solutions for homes and businesses, and automotive electrical system solutions, including audio and lighting systems. Currently, LWE is developing applications

for the Arduino platform. LWE produces all printed circuit boards at its workshop in Pennsylvania. We use only components from reputable vendors, and we offer 'lifetime limited warranty' on many of our products. This is how to do it. Make it plain, make it clear, and don't just put it in the silkscreen layer. Silkscreen paint wears off. Solder mask wears off. Copper is forever.

Shown here: the bottom of LWE's LR2032 battery recharger for use with USB-A ports. White labels are on the blue conductors. Green outline is the shape of the 20mm battery holder. The words 'LR ONLY' and 'READ THE MANUAL' are plotted into the bottom copper layer.

Most PCB makers can handle this kind of thing. We've done this before, and it looks great and clients notice it. There's something that they will remember, even if they forget where they put the manual.

'it isn't stupid,' part 2

A client of ours needed an external battery charger for a 3.7V Li-ion cell. The requirements were:

- durability, resistance to rough handling
- USB charging interface
- simplicity of design
- ROCK BOTTOM budget
- delivery ASAP (one unit, less than a week)

The result is the Lego-Akkuladegerätding. Featuring a resilient ABS shell bonded with DCM solvent, it maintains structural integrity after repeated drops onto a concrete floor from 2 metres. All of the client's requirements were met; manufacture took less than three days using on-the-shelf inventory and one custom PCB (thermal stencil: not fabulous resolution but good enough for this job and faster and cheaper than film resist), and my existing inventory of ABS plastic prototyping blocks (Legos). Total cost was ROCK BOTTOM.

And yeah, it looks stupid. But it works, and it meets all of the client's requirements. So is it stupid?

Our client was thrilled (and amused). 'Stupid' is in the eye of the beholder.

One of the things Papa Garou said was: 'if it looks stupid, but works; it isn't stupid.' This was in reference to a job he was on with Siemens many years ago, when his supervisor (a desk pilot who focused on sales) reviewed dad's plan for an installation of a 'quiet room' resistant to electromagnetic noise at a factory somewhere in Texas.

'This all looks stupid,' said his supervisor, without going into details on just what 'stupid' meant or how it was quantified.

Dad replied, 'It's under budget and ahead of schedule, and the client's engineers have approved its design, as have our own engineers. Where's the stupidity?'

His supervisor growled something about stupidity and said no more. In the end, the job went ahead and the installation was finished below budget and ahead of time, AND IT WORKED.

At the end of the job, dad's supervisor repeated, 'it still looks stupid.'

'You think it looks stupid,' said dad, 'but it works. If it looks stupid but works, it isn't stupid.'

Words of wisdom. Not the most important thing to remember in electronic engineering, but still worth mention. I've seen a lot of designs and protos that look stupid, and work, but are overly complex or expensive, therefore are actually stupid, so this isn't a universally applicable rule. There's a lot of room for stupid in engineering, of course. Avoiding stupid is harder than it seems.
