Dr. Ann’s 10-Steps to Prevent Breast Cancer
1. Maintain a healthy body weight (BMI less than 25) throughout your life. Weight gain in midlife, independent of BMI, has been shown to significantly increase breast cancer risk. Additionally, and elevated BMI has been conclusively shown to increase the risk of post-menopausal breast cancer.
2. Minimize or avoid alcohol. Alcohol use is the most well established dietary risk factor for breast cancer. The Harvard Nurses’ Health study, along with several others, has shown consuming more than one alcoholic beverage a day can increase breast cancer risk by as much as 20-25 percent.
3. Consume as many fruits and vegetables as possible. Eat sevenor more servings daily. The superstars for breast cancer protection include all cruciferousvegetables (broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower) ; dark leafy greens (collards, kale, spinach) ; carrots and tomatoes. The superstar fruits include citrus, berries and cherries. Note: it is best to eat cruciferous vegetables raw or lightly cooked, as some of the phytochemicals believed to offer protection against breast cancer are destroyed by heat.
4. Exercise regularly the rest of your life. Many studies have shown that regular exercise provides powerful protection against breast cancer. Aim for 30 minutes or more of moderate aerobic activity (brisk walking) five or more days a week. Consistency and duration, not intensity, are key!
5. Do your fats right! The type of fat in your diet can affect your breast cancer risk. Minimize consumption of omega-6 fats (sunflower, safflower, corn and cottonseed oils), saturated fats and trans fats. Maximize your intake of omega-3 fats, especially from oily fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines, lake trout and herring). Consume monounsaturated oils (canola, olive oil, nuts/seeds, avocados) as your primary fat source, as these foods have potential anticancer properties. Specifically, canola oil is a goodsource of omega-3 fats; extra virgin olive oil is a potent source of antioxidant polyphenols, including squalene; and nuts andseeds provide you with the cancer protective mineral, selenium.
6. Do your carbs right! Minimize consumption of the high glycemic index, “Great White Hazards” – white flour, white rice, white potatoes, sugar and products containing them. These foods trigger hormonal changes that promote cellular growth in breasttissue. Replace these “wrong” carbs with whole grains and beans/legumes. Beans/legumes because of their high fiber and lignan content are especially special.
7. Consume whole food soy products regularly, such as tofu, tempeh, edamame, roasted soy nuts, soy milk and miso. Only consume organic, non-GMO (genetically modified) soy. Epidemiologic studies have shown a positive association between soy consumption and reduced breast cancer risk.
8. Minimize exposure to pharmacologic estrogens and xeno-estrogens. Do not take prescription estrogens unless medically indicated. Lifetime exposure to estrogen plays a fundamental role in the development of breast cancer. Also avoid estrogen-like compounds found in environmental pollutants, such aspesticides and industrial chemicals. Buy organic produce if you can afford it; otherwise, thoroughly wash all non-organic produce. Minimize exposure to residual hormones found in non-organic dairy products, meat and poultry.
9. Take your supplements daily. A multivitamin, 500-1,000 mg of vitamin C in divided doses, 200-400 IUs of vitamin E as mixed tocopherols, and pharmaceutical grade fish oil. Also take 200 mcg of the mineral selenium or eat one to two Brazilnuts as an alternative. If you have a chronic medical conditionor take prescription drugs, consult your physician first.
10. Maintain a positive mental outlook. Engage in self-nurturingbehaviors regularly. Develop rich, warm and mutually beneficial relationships with family and friends. Get adequate sleep (7-8 hours per night). The mind-body associations with breast cancer are significant.

INSPIRATIONAL STORY TO START YOUR WEEK

There was a Farmer who collected horses; he only needed one more breed to complete his collection. One day, he found out that his neighbour had the particular horse breed he needed. So, he constantly bothered his neighbour until he sold it to him. A month later, the horse became ill and he called the veterinarian, who said; "Well, your horse has a virus. He must take this medicine for three days. I’ll come back on the 3rd day and if he’s not better, we’re going to have to put him down."

Nearby, the pig listened closely to their conversation. Th¬e next day, they gave him the medicine and left. The pig approached the horse and said; "Be strong, my friend. Get up or else they’re going to put you to sleep!"

On the second day, they gave him the medicine and left. The pig came back and said; "Come on buddy, get up or else you're going to die! Come on, I'll help you get up. Let’s go! One, two, three..."

On the third day, they came to give him the medicine and the vet said: "Unfortunately,¬¬ ¬ we’re going to have to put him down tomorrow. Otherwise, the virus might spread and infect the other horses." After they left, the pig approached the horse and said; "Listen pal, it's now or never! Get up, come on! Have courage! Come on! Get up! Getup! That’s it, slowly! Great! Come on,one, two, three.. Good, good. Now faster, come on.... Fantastic! Run, run more! Yes! Yes! Yes! You did it, you’re a champion!"
All of a sudden, the owner came back, saw the horse running in the field and started shouting; "It’s a miracle! My horse is cured. This deserves a party. Let's kill the pig!

This often happens in the workplace, and our daily lives. Nobody truly knows which employee/¬¬person actually deserves the merit of success, or who’s actually contributing the necessary support to make things happen.

MY PRAYER FOR YOU THIS MONTH IS, may your GLORY never be taken by another man.

Top Tricks Applied by MUK, KYU and MUBS Female Campusers

1. At MUBS, chics parade the kikomando stall in groups of tens, so you can never know who exactly is buying the kikomando and rolex. The MUBS babes also have a common trick they copied from IUIU , they flock the chappati seller putting on veils therefore even if you are the boyfriend, you can recognize her.

2. Kyambogo chics don't give a damn, they will come with their containers, ask for their food and pretend one of their friend is sick and partuclary wants to eat that kind of food today. Food like Katogo, offal (byenda) and not chips.

3. When it comes to MUK, they have a term known as AS USUAL. So don’t get surprised when a MUK babes passes by a tomato or retail shop with earpieces stuck in her ears then shouts AS USUAL. She will then come back and pick up, her cooking oil for 300, 2 tomatoes, one onion and half a green pepper.

4. Campus babes also employ another trick, for example MUK and MUBS babes always make sure that they keep new polythene bags from Nakumatta, Shoprite, Quality supermarket, Capital shoppers, Uchumi and Tuskys. They will then hide these buveeras in their bags, head to cheap market places like the Wandegeya market, Owino, Nakawa Market and buy stuff. You will think they just shopped from those big supermarkets only to find bundles of cassava, rolex, eggplants and kilos of posho in the buveeras.

5. This other trick usually happens for MUK babes when they are in the mood of eating Nile Perch-empuuta. They will come and stand on the other side of the road then communicate in sign language. Others will just come and quickly drop the money by the vendor then walk away only to return and pick up their nile-perch.

6. You think MUBS babes have many clothes, don’t be deceived. These ones have mastered the art of exchanging tops. Wear once and transfer it to someone at another campus. For example they have connections. A MUBS babe will wear a yellow top today then send it to her colleague at MUK and her colleague at MUK will also send in her new top. So if you are a fresher, you will keep wondering how second years manage to buy new clothes every day. Don’t be deceived, it is barter trading of clothes.

7. At KIU, the Ugandan girls these days date Sudanese and they tell them that they can only meet them at night. When it comes to night time, these gold diggers will put on very dark attires to disguise themselves before making off with the guys dimes.

8. The other trick is so common with babes at Busitema, Mbarara and Gulu. They get passion fruit juice and put it in the plastic soda bottles then pretend to be taking soda.

9. When it comes to MUK halls and hostels. For example girls at Mary Stuart have a habit of not throwing away empty egg shells. One time I visited someone’s hall-room and saw five full trays of eggs. I was so amazed that when she went out to buy me mineral water, I decided to check out and confirm. I found out that the downer trays were all full of empty egg shells which are used to deceive visitors that these girls are loaded.

10. To hide their village nature, campus babes have stopped ordering for common things like chips and chicken. These days, they have learned names like Pizza and Burgers. So be careful if a girl orders for such snacks. Rest assured she is disguising her local swag. In fact watch out the way she pronounces Pizza if she struggles so hard with putting the ’t’ ie Pitsa then know she is pretending.

The other tricks these campus babes use include renaming food joints with names of big hotels. For example, if someone is eating at a hideout in Kikoni, they will say that I am off to Sheraton. If it is Kikumi Kikumi, they will talk of Serena. And in case a girl wants to send her counterpart for a kikomando. She will tell her, ’Sharon please get me chips and liver.’ If you wait longer, you will see the girl pulling back with kikomando. And to confuse you, she will shout at her friend, ’Naawe Sharon kati why did you buy me this when I sent you for chips and liver’’

I’ve learned-
that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is be someone who can be loved. The rest is up to them.

I’ve learned-
that no matter how much I care, some people just don’t care back.

I’ve learned-
that it takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it.

I’ve learned-
that no matter how good a friend is, they’re going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that.

I’ve learned-
that it’s not what you have in your life but who you have in your life that counts.

I’ve learned-
that you should never ruin an apology with an excuse.

I’ve learned-
that you can get by on charm for about fifteen minutes. After that, you’d better know something.

I’ve learned-
that you shouldn’t compare yourself to the best others can do.

I’ve learned-
that you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life.

I’ve learned-
that it’s taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.

I’ve learned-
that you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.

I’ve learned-
that you can keep going long after you can’t.

I’ve learned-
that we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel.

I’ve learned-
that either you control your attitude or it controls you.

I’ve learned-
that regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is at first, the passion fades and there had better be something else to take its place.

I’ve learned-
that heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.

I’ve learned-
that money is a lousy way of keeping score.

I’ve learned-
that my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time.

I’ve learned-
that sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you’re down will be the ones to help you get back up.

I’ve learned-
that sometimes when I’m angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn’t give me the right to be cruel.

I’ve learned-
that true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love.

I’ve learned-
that just because someone doesn’t love you the way you want them to doesn’t mean they don’t love you with all they have.

I’ve learned-
that maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you’ve had and what you’ve learned from them and less to do with how many birthdays you’ve celebrated.

I’ve learned-
that you should never tell a child their dreams are unlikely or outlandish. Few things are more humiliating, and what a tragedy it would be if they believed it.

I’ve learned-
that your family won’t always be there for you. It may seem funny, but people you aren’t related to can take care of you and love you and teach you to trust people again. Families aren’t biological.

I’ve learned-
that it isn’t always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you are to learn to forgive yourself.

I’ve learned-
that no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn’t stop for your grief.

I’ve learned-
that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.

I’ve learned-
that a rich person is not the one who has the most, but is one who needs the least.

I’ve learned-
that just because two people argue, it doesn’t mean they don’t love each other. And just because they don’t argue, it doesn’t mean they do.

I’ve learned-
that we don’t have to change friends if we understand that friends change.

I’ve learned-
that you shouldn’t be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life forever.

I’ve learned-
that two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different.

I’ve learned-
that no matter how you try to protect your children, they will eventually get hurt and you will hurt in the process.

I’ve learned-
that even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you, you will find the strength to help.

I’ve learned-
that credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.

I’ve learned-
that the people you care about most in life are taken from you too soon.

I’ve learned-
that it’s hard to determine where to draw the line between being nice and not hurting people’s feelings, and standing up for what you believe.

I’ve learned-
that people will forget what you said, and people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.
