Dangers of being a shy and silent researcher.
- Missed opportunities. By not speaking up, you may miss out on valuable feedback, networking opportunities, and the chance to showcase your work.
- Slow (stunted) professional development. Active participation in discussions, research groups, workshops, etc is crucial for staying updated with the latest research trends and for building a reputation in your field.
- Silence can lead to feelings of isolation. I am a part of a research group with regular meetings to share ideas, challenges, and successes. Without this exchange, I could have felt disconnected and unsupported.
- Miscommunication. This could be a major danger because colleagues may misinterpret your silence as disinterest or incompetence, which can affect your professional relationships and opportunities.
- Impact on mental health. I suffered some bouts of nightmares and realised that the stress of not expressing your thoughts and ideas can lead to anxiety, depression, and a lack of fulfilment in your career.
