The development of the cult of donuts was largely contributed to by the American entrepreneur Vernon Rudolph. On July 13, 1937, Rudolph began selling Krispy Kreme donuts in a small grocery store in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The aroma of sweet pastries spread throughout the street, thanks to which Rudolph's small undertaking became incredibly popular among local residents. Soon, a whole chain of family-run coffee shops grew under the Krispy Kreme brand. By the 1950s, Vernon Rudolph realized that it was necessary to expand production: he launched a factory for the production of high-quality dry doughnut mix, and then equipment for their production. In 1997, Krispy Kreme donuts were officially recognized as one of the symbols of the United States.
