Building Smart and Green Cities with Geospatial Data

Public and private sector clients are facing increasing pressure to deliver infrastructure that is not only functional but also environmentally sustainable. In this context, geospatial technologies are becoming indispensable tools—enabling more precise site analysis, reducing the need for on-site visits, and supporting the design of infrastructure that integrates with the environment rather than disrupting it.

High-accuracy geospatial data is fundamental to sustainability—it ensures that planning, monitoring, and decision-making are based on reliable, real-world conditions.

Today, these tools play a critical role in the transition to green infrastructure and climate adaptation.

Accurate mapping of urban areas, terrain, and transportation networks enables efficient planning and maintenance of infrastructure. Thanks to satellite image processing technologies, we can also monitor changes in natural ecosystems — for example, in forests, which store over 861 gigatons of carbon worldwide

As a result, geospatial data serves a dual purpose: supporting both the modernization of human infrastructure and the protection of natural systems—forming the foundation of smart, climate-conscious planning.

With growing urban populations and aging infrastructure, cities face increasing pressure to upgrade roads, bridges, public transport, and utilities. Each of these projects presents an opportunity to build smarter and greener infrastructure. For example, modernizing outdated systems with energy-efficient solutions or redesigning urban spaces to prioritize pedestrian and bicycle traffic can significantly reduce environmental impact.

This is where geospatial technologies become a key tool.

1. Digitizing workflows to reduce environmental footprint
Transitioning from traditional paper-based processes to digital systems is the first step toward a more environmentally friendly approach to infrastructure. Small changes in daily operations may seem minor, but across thousands of projects worldwide, they lead to a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions and resource consumption.

Beyond digitization, geospatial technologies enable the design of infrastructure focused on sustainability:

National Geospatial Data As Digital Infrastructure: A Strategic Asset For Governments

Today, governments around the world are rapidly digitalizing public services — from e-government platforms to smart city systems. Citizens increasingly expect seamless digital interactions, whether they are registering a business, accessing healthcare, or navigating public services.

One of the most notable examples is Diia, Ukraine’s digital government platform, widely recognized as one of the most advanced and comprehensive mobile-first public service ecosystems. It shows how digital services can become an integral part of everyday life.

However, behind every digital service lies a critical but often overlooked foundation: geospatial data.

Geospatial data underpins many digital services, from address systems and administrative boundaries to transport networks and infrastructure. Without a consistent spatial framework, even the most advanced platforms struggle to function reliably.

What happens when this foundation contains errors?

What if emergency services are sent to the wrong location?

What if an infrastructure project is planned based on outdated or inconsistent data?

What if a citizen cannot access a service because their address is recorded differently across systems?

One of the key challenges many countries face today is fragmentation. Geospatial data is often spread across multiple institutions, formats, and standards. As a result, inconsistencies arise — addresses may not match, boundaries may differ, and datasets may not integrate smoothly.

A unified national geospatial data provider is essential. Without a single source of truth, fragmentation, duplication, and errors across systems are unavoidable.

Geospatial Future Of Africa

Across Africa, the need for accurate and accessible geospatial data is growing rapidly. Today, mapping is far more than a technical task — it underpins national planning, climate resilience, infrastructure development, and sustainable growth for millions of people.

According to the World Urbanization Prospects (UN DESA), and analyses by UNECA, Africa is experiencing one of the fastest and most significant urbanization processes globally. As highlighted in the Africa Urban Forum materials, the continent’s urban population may double by 2050, while major cities are becoming key engines of economic development, innovation, and social transformation.

This rapid growth presents both opportunities and challenges. Urbanization can drive job creation, infrastructure expansion, and improved quality of life — yet without modern planning and reliable data, it may also lead to inequality, unplanned expansion, and pressure on public services.

Geospatial information plays a central role in addressing these challenges. It provides a clear, accurate understanding of real conditions on the ground, supports informed decision-making, and enables countries to guide the development of cities that grow wisely and sustainably.

We strongly believe that geospatial data is essential. It helps countries understand their environment, manage rapidly growing cities (such as Abidjan, Lagos, or Dar es Salaam), respond to natural risks, and build a foundation for long-term progress.

We also support the message of Côte d’Ivoire’s Centre for Geographic and Digital Information (CIGN) who emphasizes that strong geospatial systems rely on:

accessible and high-quality national datasets,
updated land-use maps and 3D models,
modern reference frameworks,
integration of satellite imagery,
effective cooperation between institutions,
and trust in data for decision-making.
These principles fully align with VISICOM’s values and long-term work on the continent.

Visicom At MWC Barcelona 2026: Five Key Industry Trends

This year’s MWC Barcelona was particularly special, marking 20 years of the event being held in the city. Over the past two decades, MWC has grown into one of the most important global platforms where the industry gathers to showcase new technologies and discuss where the telecom market is heading.
The exhibition brought together nearly 105,000 participants from more than 200 countries, including companies, startups, mobile operators, and technology experts from around the world.
The VISICOM and boodmoe teams also took part in the event, presenting geospatial data solutions for telecom infrastructure, network planning, and digital services to international partners.
