Engineers at Northwestern University have demonstrated a new approach in which a machine is made up of small autonomous modules that connect with one another like a construction set and can change shape depending on the task. Today it is a simple moving mechanism, and tomorrow the same elements can be assembled into a completely different system.

This is an important step in the development of robotics because it opens the way to universal machines that adapt to their environment instead of being designed for a single function. Such technologies could change the approach to rescue operations, space exploration, and automation as a whole.

Ukraine is testing Phantom MK-one humanoid robots created to operate in conditions where human presence is dangerous. The robot is about one hundred seventy-five centimeters tall, weighs approximately eighty kilograms, and can carry up to twenty kilograms of equipment. Phantom MK-one is capable of conducting reconnaissance, delivering ammunition and supplies, evacuating the wounded, and carrying out tasks in hazardous areas. The robot is controlled by a human and is not yet autonomous. The goal of the tests is to determine how effectively such systems can perform combat and logistics tasks while reducing the risks to soldiers’ lives. If the trials are successful, Phantom MK-one could become a buffer between humans and danger on the battlefield.
