Monetization is undoubtedly one of the most crucial tools that sustain the life of a product, often – of the entire company. There are dozens of models of various types and effectiveness. But this time, we want to share a different example.
Recently, the authors of Unreal Engine announced a new subscription format called Unity Runtime Fee, where developers would be charged a fee after each product installation.
This turn of events not only infuriated game developers but also the gaming community at large. Virtually everyone criticized the new system. Dozens of studios decided to boycott the product – including developers with titles with hundreds of millions of downloads: Azur Games, Supercent, Ducky, Voodoo, Burny Games, and others. If Unity does not change its plans, the commission will start being imposed beginning in 2024.
