two versions of the same meeting:

one where feedback is pre-softened into «bite sized» pieces, disagreement gets called overthinking, and the real conversation happens later in DMs.

one where someone says «the boundary is wrong» and three people lean in.

difference isn’t process. it’s whether people expect to still be on this product next year.

your team doesn’t have a code review problem. it has a review attention problem.

code volume went up. careful readers didn’t.

so: machines fail things first (types, tests, linters, architecture rules). humans get what’s left: the diffs where technically correct and actually right diverge.

and three doors never go unwatched: money, auth, migrations.

« read everything » is how everything gets skimmed.

“is AI actually cheaper?” me and my CTO wrote down our argument.

his side: $20/month, hours saved weekly, once fixed broken code with a prompt without opening the file. that’s a receipt, not an opinion.

my side: the rate never changed. the saving landed in the calendar: same scope, half the time. nobody negotiates the calendar.

where we agree: the tool does what you asked and nothing you didn’t. no tests, no structure, no security questions, unless they were in the request.

the bill arrives in the architecture, months later. cheaper only if someone set the rules before the first prompt.

norway has 5.6 million people. fewer than metropolitan madrid, and that’s the whole country.

« the nordic senior market is tight » isn’t a market condition. it’s arithmetic. the pool was never big.

you can’t out-hire arithmetic. so the good teams there stopped optimising recruitment and started optimising retention.

remote made every market this small. the nordics just noticed first.

“we need to rewrite before we can add AI”

no you don’t.

a rewrite freezes your roadmap for a year and hands you the same product with newer syntax, while your competitors ship.

we put AI into a rails system running in 30+ countries without rewriting it. legacy isn’t an insult. it means the thing survived reality long enough to collect edge cases.

legacy is not an insult. it is knowledge, written badly.

we deleted “junior developer” from our price list.

not because of AI. in 7 years clients asked for a junior twice, both before AI existed. the demand was already gone.

what AI removed was the ladder: boilerplate, first tests, migrations. the stuff you climbed to become senior.

so where do the next seniors come from?

empty catch block: «// TODO: handle later»

translation: the charge failed, the order shipped, and you’ll hear about it from the customer, not the logs.

a crash tells you where it broke. a swallowed error just lets the data go wrong in silence.

fail loud.

The fear with any outside engineer is the same: what happens to quality when someone who isn’t on your team writes code that reaches your users? Here’s the actual path a change takes with us. Your engineer writes it in your repo. A senior architect on our side reviews it before you ever see it (two seniors on the work, one price). Then your team reviews it against your standards. Then it merges, into a codebase you own. You get embedded throughput plus a review net, and you still hold the merge button.

The whole « where should we hire » debate, on one chart. A senior engineer of the same level costs ~$70-85/hr on contract in Eastern Europe, $90-130 in Western Europe, and $110-150 in the US. Same seniority, up to double the price, and the only thing that changed is the time zone the invoice comes from. Cheaper isn’t the point, and it’s not why we sit where we sit. The reason is senior depth that overlaps both US and EU hours.

It’s the first of August, and half of Europe just switched on an out-of-office and meant it. Quiet weeks like this aren’t lost time. The best calls I’ve made about the business came from a slow morning with no calendar, not another packed Tuesday. Rest isn’t the opposite of building, it’s the part where your brain connects what it was too busy to connect. If you’re still online today, close the laptop.
