After its recent announcements at the August 10th Unpacked event, Samsung’s latest generation of foldable phones are official, and they’re coming out soon. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 are promising many refinements to Samsung’s established foldable formula. It remains a two-pronged approach: the cheaper Flip 4 folds in half from a “normal”-sized phone to a tiny device that’s easily pocketable, while the ultra-flagship Fold 4 sits at the top end, expanding from an average-sized phone to a mini tablet. Both models are set to arrive on August 26th, and preorders are now open across retailers and carriers.

As for the phones themselves, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 starts at $999.99 and features a new processor, a larger battery, faster charging, and a main screen with improved durability over the last-gen version. The camera is also inheriting the improved nighttime performance introduced with the Galaxy S22 line, and Samsung is promising the smaller outer display will be more useful than on previous models, allowing you to do more before unfolding.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4, on the other hand, starts at $1,799.99. In addition to the performance benefits afforded by the newer processor, the premium smartphone offers a more durable main screen — one that clocks in at 7.6 inches when unfolded and supports Samsung’s S Pen. When the phone is closed, however, you get a cover screen that’s now about 3mm wider, feeling a little less tall and narrow. The new width is a reduction of the bezels and, overall, the Fold 4 is lighter for easier one-handed use.

The latest foldable phones from Samsung are due August 26th.

Folding phones seem, intuitively, like a great idea. Phones are good! Tablets are good! Put them both together, fold it in half, and presto: you’ve made the best of both worlds. Credit to Samsung, too, for willingly subjecting itself to all the growing pains of figuring out how to make a good foldable phone. Last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 was a good foldable, and the new Z Fold 4 looks to be even better, if ever so slightly. (I have lots of thoughts about the new era of flip phones, like the Z Flip 4, but we’ll save those for another day.)

What Samsung hasn’t done — what no one has done yet, really — is make the case for why you’d actually want a foldable phone. And until it can explain why it’s worth all the extra cost and tradeoffs, I’m having a hard time figuring out why you’d be willing to give up the phone you know and love to get one.

What Samsung needs to do with the Galaxy Fold (and the rest of the industry will eventually need to do with their own foldables) is convince people that it’s worth buying a phone that’s more expensive, more fragile, and takes up more room in your pocket.

Nobody makes better foldables than Samsung, but foldables still aren’t better than your phone.

BEREAL: HOW TO TAKE PICTURES
To get started, download the app. It’s available on the App Store and the Google Play Store. As soon as you open the app, you’ll be prompted to enter your name and phone number and select some contacts to add as friends. Now that you’ve got an account, you’ll get a notification from BeReal the next time it’s time to take a photo.

If the stars align, you will open the app directly after you receive this notification and immediately see the camera pop up (or a button that says Post a Late BeReal if it’s been a few minutes since the alert went out). However, you may well open the app directly after receiving your notification and not see the camera. This is normal. BeReal can take a while to actually let you take the photo it’s just prompted you to take. My best advice is to try opening and closing the app a few times — or just be patient and come back in a few minutes. I promise that you will eventually be able to take your photo.

You might need to be patient.

Anker launched a new $149.99 portable PowerCore 24K GaN charger housing a big 24,000mAh battery for you to carry around, which is capable of being fast charged at 140W but can also dish out power at the same rate (via 9to5Toys). That’s powerful enough to charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro to 50 percent in 40 minutes, assuming you’re using the MagSafe to USB-C cable.

The PowerCore is equipped with the new Power Delivery 3.1 specification that can pump more than the previous maximum of 100W from a single USB-C port. Anker’s new battery bank can pump 140W of power out of either of the two USB-C ports, and there’s also one USB-A port capable of 18W charging.

PowerCore also includes features from Anker’s set of new “GaNPrime” chargers introduced last month based on the high-powered GaN 3-based tech. GaNPrime chargers promise improvements in AC-to-DC conversion efficiency, more total power output, and better temperature sensing, all in a slightly smaller package.

The other chargers that Anker just released aren’t capable of PD 3.1, including the new Anker 747 GaNPrime, which is capable of 150W of charging; however, each single port can still only output 100W max.

The new 737 PowerCore 24K can punch 140W in and out.

GALAXY Z FOLD 3 VERSUS Z FOLD 4: TINY, ITERATIVE IMPROVEMENTS
Samsung’s Galaxy Fold line has certainly come a long way since its disastrous origins. While the cheaper Z Flip has become the new option for those who are foldable-curious, the Galaxy Z Folds remain the premium, flagship-level phones in Samsung’s lineup. Last year’s Z Fold 3 helped break new ground in terms of folding phone normalcy with features like water resistance, which still pales in comparison to traditional slab phones. That said, the new Z Fold 4 maintains a lot of the improvements of last year’s Fold 3, like that IPX8 resistance, a 7.6-inch folding OLED, and a skinny yet usable outside cover screen — which are now cheaper to repair in the event of an accident.

The Z Fold 4, much like the S22 generation, offers numerous small improvements that iterate upon the last model. Its outward screen is now about 3mm wider, offering an aspect ratio that feels a little less awkward and slim. The under-display selfie camera is supposed to blend into the screen better, too, and that inner display is more durable than last year’s model despite the phone being slightly lighter. Samsung says this lighter build is to help with one-handed use.

Motorola is finally updating its Razr foldable — but only in China. The 2022 Razr offers a larger main screen, an extra camera, and Qualcomm’s latest and greatest chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. There’s also a new Flex View mode so you can open the screen halfway and use the phone hands-free. Kind of reminds us of another folding phone...

The 2022 Razr includes an upgraded main camera with 50 megapixels and optical stabilization plus a new 13-megapixel ultrawide. The main screen is a 6.7-inch OLED with a 144Hz refresh rate. It outdoes the Galaxy Z Flip 4 with a bigger 2.7-inch cover screen — while the Flip’s is a much smaller 1.9 inches, making it more of an at-a-glance display. With 2.7 inches, the Razr’s screen can offer a lot more, including a full notification interface.

It’s basically a Z Flip 4 with a more useful cover screen.
