Call for Instructors: COES-WIO 2026

Building on its successful inaugural year, the Coastal Ocean Environment School – Western Indian Ocean (COES-WIO) 2026, taking place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from 20-26th September is inviting experts and organisations to propose immersive, hands-on project track sessions.

Selected instructors will facilitate practical research experiences for groups of 15–20 diverse participants, ranging from students and research scientists to regional policymakers. Applications bridging theory and application in oceanography through experiential learning, are encouraged for proposal submission.

Apply for WIOMPAN’s First Regional Exchange Programme🌍

WIOMPAN is delighted to announce the launch of its pilot practitioner-led regional exchange programme. This 10-day training is aimed at building practical competence, promoting south–south learning, and strengthening the regional community of practice in MPA management.

Hosted by SPGA - Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority, this hands-on exchange will take place from August 20th-30th 2025.

WIOMPAN members, WIO-COMPAS-certified MPA Professionals, and experienced MPA staff are invited to apply by 30th July 2025. 🗓️

The Artisanal Mariculture Sciences and Village Farming Program, held in Toliara, Madagascar is accepting applications for its 2nd cohort. Specialised short courses and a comprehensive year-long curriculum are offered in this unique training on sea cucumber, seaweed, spirulina and coral farming.

Interested individuals in the natural or social science, and artisanal mariculture fields are invited to apply for the training by 13th July 2025.

Applications are open for the inaugural Coastal Ocean Environment School in Western Indian Ocean (COES-WIO) in Mombasa, Kenya, from September 21-27, 2025.

This pre-activity for the upcoming 13th WIOMSA Symposium offers hands-on training in ocean science, including fieldwork, lab analysis, and data interpretation, for 75 young professionals from the WIO region.

Students and early-career professionals in marine science are invited to apply by July 15th, 2025.

“Ocean Literacies,” a WIOMSA Magazine special edition, is calling for contributions.🌊

This special issue seeks to highlight the diverse ways communities, researchers, artists, and practitioners in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region understand, relate to, and communicate about the ocean, emphasising the richness and plurality of ocean knowledge systems.

Submissions, which can include photostories, artworks, poems, stories, articles, or research summaries, are invited by July 31st, 2025.

UN Ocean Decade Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute Nairobi Convention

Women professionals in research, policy, and practice, working at the intersection of climate, agriculture and gender, are invited to apply for the 2nd cohort of the AWARD Climate Action (ACA) Fellowship.

As a flagship program funded under the CLARE initiative (Climate Adaptation and Resilience, the ACA fellowship accelerates women-led gender responsive climate adaptation solutions in African agrifood systems. Applications for the 12-month program close on June 30th, 2025.
