"Neuralink Experiment Succeeds: How Musk is Reshaping the Relationship Between Humans and AI"
Elon Musk's Neuralink company has successfully implanted an AI chip into the human brain, breaking down the barrier between humans and machines. Musk believes that the integration of humans and machines is the key to preventing AI from developing autonomy and potential rebellion, turning machines into an extension of human will to avoid the emergence of autonomous systems with their own consciousness.
Last May, Neuralink received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct human trials. In January of this year, they implanted an AI chip into a human brain for the first time. By February, Musk announced on the X platform that the first patient could control a computer mouse with their thoughts.
"Everything is progressing well, the patient has fully recovered with no adverse reactions observed, and can move the mouse on the screen with their thoughts," Musk reported.
The experiment is named PRIME, which stands for Precise Robotically Implanted brain-computer Interface. The surgery involves a craniotomy performed by a doctor, followed by a robot implanting the chip in the brain area that controls movement. The chip is connected to multiple hair-thin wires covered with electrodes that connect to the brain cortex through ultra-fine needle tips.
Neuralink aims to help severely paralyzed patients control external devices such as computers and smartphones through their thoughts. "Just by thinking, you can control your phone or computer, and thereby control almost any device," Musk explained. This technology also seeks to treat a variety of conditions including obesity and autism, and even restore sight to the blind in the future.
The long-term goal of this technology is to achieve complex cognitive and sensory functions and eventually upload the human brain to the cloud through a brain-computer interface. Musk's vision is to achieve human-machine integration; otherwise, he believes, "it’s either humans controlling AI, or AI controlling humans."
