Metasepia pfefferi
火焰花枝（學名：Metasepia pfefferi）是世界上最小、也最具視覺震撼力的烏賊之一，體長通常僅 6–8 公分。牠分布於印尼、馬來西亞、巴布亞新幾內亞等西太平洋與印度洋海域，多棲息在 3–80 公尺的沙地與礁石交界處。
最令人印象深刻的，是牠宛如霓虹燈般的色彩變化——紅、黃、紫、白在體表流動。這不是單純為了「好看」，而是一種警戒色（Aposematism）：火焰花枝體內含有毒素，能讓掠食者付出慘痛代價。
與多數烏賊不同，火焰花枝並不常游泳，反而喜歡「走路」。牠利用腕足在海床上一步步前進，像是在舞台上登場，這也是牠英文名字 Flamboyant（華麗、張揚）的由來。

The Flamboyant Cuttlefish (Metasepia pfefferi) is one of the smallest yet most visually striking cuttlefish species in the world, typically measuring only 6–8 cm in length. It inhabits sandy and rubble bottoms near coral reefs across the Indo-Pacific, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea, at depths of 3–80 meters.
Its vivid, pulsating colors—reds, yellows, purples, and whites—are not for decoration. They serve as aposematic warning coloration, signaling that the animal is toxic. Unlike many cuttlefish, the flamboyant cuttlefish rarely swims; instead, it “walks” across the seafloor using its arms, giving it a theatrical, almost performative appearance.

對許多潛水員來說，第一次看到火焰花枝，往往是在夜潛或沙地微距潛水中。牠不急著逃跑，反而站在那裡，顏色一層一層地亮起，彷彿在說：「我知道你在看我。」
科學家發現，火焰花枝即使在幼體階段，就已經能展現完整的警戒色彩，這在頭足類中相當罕見。牠短暫的一生——通常不到一年——幾乎把所有能量，都用在「活得精彩」這件事上。
牠不快、不大，也不隱藏，卻在海底留下最難忘的身影。

For many divers, the first encounter with a flamboyant cuttlefish happens during a night dive or a slow macro dive over sandy bottoms. Instead of fleeing, it often pauses, its colors intensifying in waves—as if aware that it is being watched.
Scientists have observed that flamboyant cuttlefish display full warning coloration even as juveniles, a rare trait among cephalopods. With a lifespan of less than a year, this species seems to invest everything in one mission: to live boldly.
It is not fast. It is not large. It does not hide.
Yet it becomes unforgettable.
