Our Story

Blackeye is a cross reality (XR) experience studio and consultancy providing large scale, complex immersive virtual and mixed reality experiences. We operate in two countries: from Auckland in New Zealand, and from Kaohsiung and Taipei in Taiwan.

Our consulting experience is extensive, given the short history of this latest chapter in the mass adoption of virtual reality. We have produced complex VR and 360 video experiences for commercial clients and advised many others on local suppliers.

We have written two books, Virtual Gets Real (released September 2017), and Going Next Level (due for release). Both were authored by our Managing Director of Blackeye VR, Michael Gregg, in conjunction with the New Zealand VR/AR Association (NZVRARA).

We have assisted in the establishment of a novel convertible note debt/equity funding structure for selected New Zealand emerging tech startups and are part of the boutique venture investment fund, XR1.

Blackeye co-founded the first PROJECTR® XR centre in 2016, after the initial concept was conceived by our Director Michael Gregg, based on his earlier work with MediaLab (CEO, 2001-2006). Michael has continued the concept’s expansion with an Auckland-based Centre in 2018 (PROJECTR® Auckland). Construction is underway for the first offshore center, PROJECTR® Taipei; located in that city’s historic Datong district. We are currently reviewing a fourth center location.

Now Blackeye is active in Taiwan, we welcome approaches from the tech startup community – from New Zealand, Australia and other English-speaking countries, to establish disruptive technology subsidiaries into North Asia. We are involved with the local PROJECTR Taipei XR Center, as well as developing our own intellectual property in virtual reality, and continuing to take consulting and complex VR production assignments.

We are excited to announce that our Southern Taiwan production studio, Blackeye VR Kaohsiung, has opened in January 2019, overlooking one of the world’s largest ports. We are fortunate to enjoy an inspiring view spanning the entire inner harbor. After securing our first major virtual reality experience project in Asia, we are now recruiting a full production studio team. Come and join Blackeye in Kaohsiung.
